I tried the 2 round ball test using the Pedersoli and Traditions 50 caliber black powder rifles. Same calibers, different barrel lengths. This one was filmed before I started adding the music. The results of this test is very interesting......
I'd love to read your thoughts about why the round balls hit the cardboard where they did. Would barrel length make that big of a difference between vertical hits verses horizontal hits??

Men tend to have better gross motor skills (strength), while women tend to have better fine motor skills (precision and accuracy). I offer this as a plausible excuse as to why you got spanked by Mrs. BPMS. Feel free to use it if you feel the need. 😄 A fun and enlightening watch as always. Thanks. :thumb:

What struck me most was the fact that both balls would have been kill shots on large game when patched balls were used. I did not expect that result and cannot even attempt to explain it. Polecat :ThankYou:

I tend to agree. She only gets out with me 3-4 times year and continually "spanks" me while shooting!

Very interesting, and unexpected. That’s the first time I’ve seen anyone double-ball. I’ve read that it’s possible to get a bit of an airlock between the two balls and struggle or not be able to ram that second ball down on top of the first one due to the fact that the air between them has nowhere to go.

Did you find that second ball to be tougher to ram? I kinda figured that if I were ever to try this I would get both balls started using a short starter, then ram them together down the barrel...

Also- it looks like your patches are not lubed, or do you lube the whole strip of material? Just curious...

Done it a few times myself, not with great results however. I used 100gr though of Pyrodex RS. Haven’t done it in years since. Loading was easy with prb separately.

We often double ball when doing post shoots at matches where you are chopping down a 2x4 stake. This is usually done at 25yds, and 2 patched balls typically hit within 2in of each other at that short a distance. If you've never done a post shoot, the winner is the first one to chop down their post, so double balling is definitely an advantage. If you've never done a post shoot, it's a blast!

I had no problem loading that 2nd ball...and...yes, I usually lube the whole strip of material and keep them wet in pill bottles till I'm ready to use them. Thanks for asking.

I need to try that sometime. I've split 1 X 6 boards, but not a 2 X 4. That would take me a while to do...LOL

This is only a guess. I would say the vertical stringing from the patch less balls would be do to them not contacting as much rifling and sort of "bouncing" in the barrel. The closer shot pattern in the shorter barrel may be due to the fact that it spends less time in the barrel so the chance of "bouncing" or clashing with the ball in front is less pronounced.
Probably wrong though.

I’m not very good at math, but I can see where there’s a lot of experimenting to do. So, I guess maniac better get busy and make some more videos. Winter’s coming on and we need something to watch!😄

If I heard you correctly on the video, you were using .480 balls and ticking is normally .016, Thats a hair undersized.. but yet your accuracy with both patched balls is really good. What lube are you using? Also noticed your ramming the balls home with the threaded end of the ram rod, I was always told to use the “pusher” end... it acts like a cradle and helps to keep the ball from mishaping. Pretty intersting video...thanks for sharing!

I have heard that double balling was also called "Loaded for Bear". If you were going to need one really good close up kill shot, a double ball just might be the answer.

🤣"take 112"....

For legal reasons I cant say I do this but have it on good authority that it certainly works.

As a tool for quickie reloads once upon a time tried adapting the paper patch bullets technique, rolling two balls together in a double wrap of wet paper, twisting the ends like a candy wrapper and letting it dry. Made a fairly durable though frangible capsule. If I wanted to use double ball loads in a smoothie that's the way I'd try it, adjusting the balls size and the paper thickness to suit. Don't think it'd work very well for a rifled barrel.
