Looking for ML turkey gun. Would like single barrel in full or double barrel in mod and full. I know Pedersoli has 12 ga in mod and full. Was the 10 ga made that way - only saw cyl and mod at Dixie. Did Navy Arms or anyone else make guns that fit my wish. Thanks for any help.

Had a 10 ga pedersoli. Came with choke tubes from Cly to full. I ordered extras. Killed two toms with it. Also have a 12 ga cva gobbler, killed ducks but no turkeys. Wouldnt hestiate to take it though

Will have to look but with a name like "gobbler" I an assuming its full. I like it alot. Plus one can shoot balls and have a "smoothbore" of sorts. I did have a rear sight cut in and now can hit what I'm aiming at. I seem to have trouble with many shotguns shooting about a foot low (was told its the way I mount them?). They are not freuquently found used but not expensive when they pop up. I would grab one if ya get the chance.

A few nice deals on gunbroker last weekend for doubles if you want a double.

Colerain makes a nice turkey choked barrel. I have never used one, but seriously thinking about it. The following is copied directly from their website;

For many years now we have been producing turkey choke gun barrels. These barrels are for shot only due the tight restriction at the muzzle. We offer these in 20 gauge bore that restricts to 58 caliber at the muzzle. We have had nothing but wonderful success with these barrels. For those of you that love turkey hunting and muzzleloading then you should try this. Will you be handicapped? Only in the fact that you will be limited to one shoot unless you build yourself or have someone build for you a double barrel. We know builders that can do this. From all the feedback we have received from builders and hunters that one shoot is the only handicap you will have. These barrels are capable of, and do with the right load, out shooting modern turkey guns. The shoot patterns are extremely tight. The gun builder that started us down the road on these choked barrels said from the beginning that the firearm should have both a front and rear sight, not just a front bead. I know many might ask if 20ga is large enough. Yes, once again, we are dealing with a muzzleloader that we can shoot various weights of shoot through. You can even try taking it to your local turkey shoot. They might laugh at you going in, but if you can make them feel pity for you and allow you to shoot, they will ask you to not bring it back. This story did happen!!

The following loads are a sample of some being used in the field by customers.

Shown below in the order of steps taken.

100grs FFG powder

3 to 4 .125 card wads

2oz #6 lead shot

½ or 1 .125 card wad

80grs FFG powder

2.125 card wads

Styrofoam wad**

1 3/8 #5 lead shot

1 over shot wad

80grs FFG powder

1.125 card wads

1 felt wad

1oz #4 lead shot

1 over shot wad

Notes:

The .125 thick card wads should be moist. Most hunters will just suck on them till moist. They should then be started through the muzzle and the choke on there edge with a short starter. Do this one at a time if using multiple wads. Once past choke, ram all at one time onto the powder. Wads need to be seated TIGHT on the powder.

One load shows ½ to 1 .125 thick card wad over shot. The other 2 use an over the shot wad which is thin. Either will work, just make sure that everything is packed tight. You do not want your shot running out onto the ground as you walk. That might make the turkey happy, but I doubt you will be!!

** Styrofoam wad

This is made from the Styrofoam board used for insulation. ¾ to 1 inch thick. Using whatever you can find to punch out 5/8 dia. plugs. This serves two purposes. First, helps cushion the shot, preventing deformation, second, reduces felt recoil greatly

+1 on the Colerain turkey choke barrel! I have one and from what I have seen from it, it gives up nothing to any modern shotgun of any gauge or choke. 100 grains of powder topped with three 1/8 card wads that I split and wet with saliva under 2 ounces of 6's topped with a thin card is money!

If you choose a double barrel gun, I want you to absolutely develop the habit of un-capping the loaded barrel before starting to load the empty barrel. Loading the empty barrel with a cap on the loaded barrel can get you killed or maimed if the loaded barrel should somehow go off while you are loading the empty barrel. Putting the loaded barrel on half cock is not sufficiently safe, it MUST be un-capped to be safe. I have owned a couple of nice double barrel shotguns and I enjoy them but I absolutely will not attempt to load the empty barrel with the loaded barrel capped. Right after I fire one barrel and am sure that I am not going to fire the other barrel, I immediately un-cap the loaded barrel and place it on half cock before ever starting the loading process on the empty barrel. Be safe and enjoy your double barrel shotgun, if that is what you choose, for years to come. :hatsoff:

Well ,I don't know a thing about chokes :idunno: What I do know is that I have taken two turkeys :blah: Both where taken with a NSW Early English 20 gauge,1 1/4 ounce #5 shot 80 grs fffg powder, and after the smoke cleared, they were graveyard dead. :2

I agree with you, yes a barrel with no choke is not going to pattern as well as a barrel with a choke but if the turkey is close enough to shoot. I also understand sometimes the birds don't want to come in close in that case I see a need for a choke but I don't see a need for over tight patterns coalrain themselves suggested to put a rear sight on the gun and it's only going to be used for shot.

I don't fully understand how would one go about cleaning a coalrain turkey choked barrel It looks like it would be a trick if the choke is fixed?

Huntinshep Colrains turkey choke barrel is my first choice for a turkey killer. You would want to put a rear sight on it or do a lot of range work to learn where it hits because a direct body hit might dissapoint the cook .I killed a big Tom at 56 yards this spring w/mine and i still dont believe it but i stepped it off 3 times.I am not a long range hunter either as I like to get them in close range. And they are not that hard to clean either,a Little Simple Green on a tow worm is all it takes but I plan to try some paper cartridges next time I shoot just for fun. Curt

As another consideration, I couldn’t afford to have a dedicated .62cal smoothbore turkey gun with a fixed full choke, needed to be able to use PRBs for big game, etc”¦went the route of having a Rice .62cal barrel Jug Choked Full instead. This longbeard spotted me, turned, and was going away at 43 yards when I took him with a load of #4’s. The 10-pointer was inside 50 yards and dropped where he stood.

Pedersoli makes an extremely nice double 12 ga. with removable chokes. I used to have one and made the mistake of trading it off. I don't remember which chokes it comes with. I think they were full and modified but don't quote me on that. I do know that you could buy a cylinder bore choke as well as a "turkey" choke. I think the turkey choke was the same as what some refer to as a double full choke. You won't go wrong in buying a Pedersoli, they make very good guns.

Just looking at those pictures and that gorgeous gun makes me turn just a few shades of green with envy. The animals are very nice and congrats on a couple of good hunts but those beautiful woods make me long for my home in Indiana and the same kind of gorgeous woods we had there. That smoothbore is pure functional art.

A couple of questions if you will? Who did the jug choke for you? Did you have to remove the barrel from the firearm for the Smith before he did the work?

Thanks in advance.
