Nice work :applause: !I was going to post the same topic-Turkey hunting any info/advice?Bama's spring gobbler season starts March 15-Handgun and Smooth Bore hunters choice! :hmm:

Pretty stock...

I'm getting ready...just finished packing up my new GM .62cal Flint smoothbore barrel to UPS it Monday...having it jug choked "Full".

Turkey season is April 8th-May 6th...I went 4 Saturdays two years ago, and only 2 Saturdays last year...have heard birds every time, have seen them a couple times...closest was 75yds away so I haven't fired a shot yet...planning to hunt all 4 Saturdays this season...maybe I'll get lucky.

Good luck with yours!

Roundball..who you getting to jug choke it?

Someone posted this contact info on the MLF back in January...(may have been Mike Brooks, not sure)

Lowell Tennyson
209 E Lotte St.
Blue Grass IA. 52726
563-381-3711

Lowell said he's jug choked a number of smoothbores for guys who shot a lot of ML trap & skeet out there...charging me $60 + return UPS shipping

What type choke are you getting..full, extra full, etc?
I didn't get a shot last yr. and am going to stick with my cylinder bore .62 until I do get one and am not pleased with the results. I shoot the same load you do with exception of mixed shot and if I can get one within 35yds. I think it will do the trick. However, if it don't.. it's going to the jug choker for an extra full type turkey chokin.

I'm having him make it a full choke

I went out today to the guy that let me hunt turkeys on his property last year and bought a lb of powder and a couple of vent liners. While i was there i asked him about hunting this year and he said it was ok. I plan to use the new Jackie Brown Carolina smoothbore flinter. Wile driving in to his place i saw 3 seperate flocks of Turkeys. Two of them had over 20 birds in each of them and the 3rd one was 6 birds. At least ten Toms in the 3 flocks. Might be a good year.

That sounds terrific...I'd sure like to just actually have one "come in"...good luck with them!

Sounds Like you have a Good Chance of putt'n a Bird in the Ol'Turkey Deep Fat Fryer!Good luck Rebel! :v

Yep, looks like you are already off to a good start by seeing those flocks. I'll be heading out to Southwest Texas the middle of April for turkeys. Will be using my Pa. Fowler from Chambers that I just finished a few weeks ago. Still working up turkey loads-getting close tho. Good luck.
Tommy-from northeast Texas

Thanks guys, i took my first ever Tom at this guys place last spring with my Navy Arms double barrel .12 ga. Hope to take one this year with the flintlock fowler. Good luck to you too. Take care.

I'll be using this same load this yr..

Will be heading out to set up camp..already got two tents set up but they both leaked during deer season so got another one ordered. Anyway will leave next Fri. and hunt public land for about a month.
If I have to live in the woods..I'm going to get a shot this yr. I've hunted a spring gobbler season and deer season with flintlock and haven't got a shot yet. Did have some health issues to deal with..but still put in a lot of time and work not to have gotten even a shot.

What load is that Hoyt, if ya don't mind my asking? Is that a .20 ga you are shooting? Nice looking gun. Good luck this year. Hope the health issues are taken care of for good. Take care.

Thanks Rebel..my turkey load I pretty much got off Roundball..just tweaked it a little for my gun.
My gun is a 20 Old Virginia style smooth bore. My first attempt at building. A kit from Pecatonica. Used a Getz oct/rd barrel, large siler, rear site and Hedgecock simple, single trigger set at about 1-lbs. Have to be very careful with it.
My turkey load is either 70grs. of 3f or 80grs. of 2f (Goex) 2 OxYoke felt wads, 100grs. (volume) nickle plated #6's, 20grs. nickle plated #4's and 1 thin overshot card. All this goes in a glued role of Posit paper about 3/8" longer that the contents. I use the extra length to pull it out of plastic speed loader. I use nickle plated because it's supposed to give better penatration..slips through the feathers better than non-plated. Course if my aim is true it won't matter since no feathers on the head...but have been known to get a few shots in the breast neck area.
I notice the picture shows two wads in the paper shotcup..I don't do that anymore..I put one down the barrel, firm on the powder and one in the paper cup.

Good luck to you too Rebel. I usually have pretty good luck on this public land I hunt. However, last season I wasn't able to get way off and it cost me. There's just so many people hunting it now that if a bird gobbles anywhere within an hrs walk from the main rd. you won't be the only one hearing him.
If you can get on a bird within the first couple of wks..first wk especially..and not get cut off by another hunter, he'll most likely come to calling. But after the second wk. you will hear them gobble off the roost but soon as they fly down they ignore your calls, go quiet or gobble while walking away from you.
If you can get away from the crowd where the birds haven't been hounded they will come right in.
Problem is you can't get that far till the time changes. You are limited to how far you can get by when the check station opens and lets you in.

Hoyt, well maybe you will have better luck this year now that you have the medical problems resolved. Hope that they are taken care of permanently, and you have no more problems.
I have some homemade bamboo calls and a piece of slate that i picked up where we used to live that i am going to try calling them with. This will only be my second season hunting them, so i have no idea what i am really doing. There are a lot of birds around this area, and there are a bunch on the guys property that said i could hunt, so maybe i will get lucky again this year. Good luck to all who are going out to try for them. Take care.
