I made a couple of wingbone calls last yr. and I can use just about every turkey call made...but a wingbone. I found out why turkey is served on special occasions after trying to learn to use them things...turkey dinners would be few and far between if I had to depend on calling them in with a wingbone.
I made a turtle shell call that sounds as good as any call I've ever heard..just got lucky on it..was a small turtle shell which is hard to come by.

Hoyt, the bamboo calls i made are the same principal as the wingbone calls. I am getting better with them, at least i think i am. Guess i will see next month.

Can you explain a "turtle shell" call? I get lucky finding little ones in the woods, usually, so might take a turn at it if you can describe it for me. Thanks

Just seal your turtle shell with some type of clear sealer with good adheasive strength. To hold scales on if still there and to hold the shell together. Then glue..I used apoxy..slate, glass or whatever type material you like to the shell.
The one I use now is glass..I took it out of an old production call I didn't like. My slate turtle shell broke as the picture shows and I've not made another yet. I called up quite a few with the slate. The turtle shell makes a very good sound chamber.
The main reason I like small shells is that they fit in pockets better.

Hoyt,

I've got a shell I picked up just for makin a call and haven't done it yet. Are you fixin the slate to just the sides and leaving the ends open, or is it fixed in a horseshoe shape and leavin one end open?

Sure wish I had a digital camera...

Anyway, I was thinkin of cutting the base of the shell off and leaving the two "standoffs" that are there and gluing a piece of slate on them. Does that sound do-able? I guess I could just do it, but I'd hate ta ruinate the thing before I even get started...

I'm gonna use the same combination I used last year. English Fowler, 12ga Mod. 80gr 2f, 100 gr's mixed lead shot. No paper :shake: ...card over podwer and card over shot. It worked last year at 35yd's.

It may work fine like you are talking about..I don't know for sure..but if I had to bet I would say there would be too much vibration in the slate if just glued to the high points. I glue mine all the way around in a horse shoe pattern.
The reason I say it may vibrate too much is because when I get above the glued area..up front to wards the open end..the sound goes to h$%%. Kinda like a too loose guitar string. But I've been wrong many times before.

Good luck on the turks guys!! Those patterns look pretty dang good to me!

I'll be draggin my flinter to Oklahoma and Ky this spring after em as well....

Don't forget to try a mussel shell for makin' a call, they work really well and are a lot thinner if'n you can't find a small turtle shell. Just leave one end open, or both....or it won't sound quite right. I even drill a few holes in the bottom.

Take some pics and once again, GOOD LUCK!

Okay, the wife took me to Hobby Lobby last night and I spied a real slate chalkboard. ("What do you want THAT for?")

Any hints on how to cut this stuff without shattering it?

Thanks

I used a fine tooth hacksaw blade..just go slow with light pressure and keep a good grip on the slate close to the saw blade to keep it from vibrating.

High speed cutting wheel on a dremel might work too

Wife and i took a drive out to the guys property that told me i can hunt turkeys again this year to show her where it is and to see if we could spot any birds. We saw one big flock with about 7-8 toms in it in the same spot i saw them last week, and another big flock right down the road across from the guys property with more toms in it. Then we saw 3 toms at his place. Looks like it may be a good year.

You might as well be decidin on the dressin and fix'n's. Good luck..I got 3 more days and I'm out of here to set up camp for openin day Sat. Meantime I'm just daydreamin.
