Point taken and I agree. Sounds like you in your own right have contributed much to Black powder shooting and you are to be admired for it. It's funny though I live in North Carolina and have never heard anything negitive against ustas! Where did you find all this dirt about the man. If true then he should be tried in a court of law and let the chips fall where they may. As stated before no disrespect is or was intended. mudd Turtle.

No blood, no foul. I think we are all guilty of expecting a little too much from these reality based shows. I got turned off last season with the scope sighting episode which showed several different rifles during the shooting. Eustice missed a deer and then blamed the kid who sighted his gun in. Who in their right mind would have someone else sight in their deer rifle? Anyways I have actually found Eustice to be a little more palatable this year.

My wife loves the show,I wouldn't watch it if not for her. Do like the Yaak valley guy.I dont much care for useless. Now this child can eat three or four treerats cooked in the open like that.I hope they had some food in the camera mans truck.

I watched this show last year from the first to the last show. At the end of the 2nd show I knew I didn't like it, but I have too many people telling me I am too hasty in making decisions the last couple of years, so I stuck it out.

I do not watch the show this year, for various reasons. It may be entertainment, but it is not for me. Decision made, and not hastily either!

His situation was covered in a Charlotte Observer article a couple of years ago. I would not call him a fraud but in fact he lives relatively close to the Parkway and has violated a lot of County and State ordnances from time to time running his "preserve" which is what has gotten him into some difficulties. Of all the guys on that show, he is the one who has the least to brag about as far as survival skills. I lived in Montana for a couple of years and I think the two guys up there, along with the fellow in Alaska, have to toughest row to hoe. Of course with all the rain we have been having, Eustace may have washed away by now!

I like the other three men who are actually far away from civilization in the frozen north not the man who lives close to a major city down here in NC. It is because of his location I do not think he rates being on the same show as the other men.

To no one in particular;
A little more current news of Eustice, I haven't seen him on the show for a few weeks. I wonder what's up with that?

When the cameras were off, McGuire says, campers were using nail guns, bulldozers and backhoes. They ate mostly donated food, including condiments. "There wasn't a whole lot of agriculture going on," he said in a recent telephone interview.

There is, or was yesterday and this morning, a news article about him on Yahoo. Not a pretty picture. One thing it mentioned, that I was not aware of and do not think that it was mentioned on the show, is a visitor who paid admission to get into Eustace's place some time ago had her eye put out by one of his minions who was demonstrated the use of a sling. She has sued him and probably obtained a judgment. That is apparently why he is in this situation where he may lose the property. The article also talked about his use of modern tools and machinery when the camera is turned off. This was reported by people who were in his "internship" program and apparently have first-hand knowledge. The piece also mentions all the violations of building codes and sanitation codes which have been found on the property. I suppose it is fine for him to do all these things if it is just him but he is inviting folks onto the property and charging admission for doing so which to me means that he has got to comply with State and local ordinances governing that sort of thing or stay in trouble all the time. Postscript...the MSN article link a couple of posts up is the same one that was on Yahoo. If the information is accurate then all the angst about making the payments to somebody is related to the law suit. If one of his guys had put out my eye I would have sued him too but I would never have settled for $75K and you can be damn sure of that!

This show has personally turned me off to any and all so called reality shows. I know Tom from Yaak Montana and while he is a nice guy and does actually brain tan hides (and does it very well) He is hardly living a primitive mountain man existence.
He has color TV and satellite, washer and dryer and is more comfortable than many other Yaak residents.
The episode where they stated he lives 100 miles from the nearest grocery was the final straw.
He lives 45 miles from Libby Montana which has very nice grocery stores and he is about 3 miles from a small convenience store/Mercantile. He also lives about 100 yards off a paved highway.
I suspect he is in it for the money and good on him for it but it's all a crock.
I don't know the Eustace guy but from what I have read about him here and with what I know about Tom Oar I can safely conclude that it is all BS.
Too bad the History Channel can't come up with some real history programming instead of a bunch of shows that are completely made up or insult our intelligence.

It's neat that ya know the feller. I think he's the only real guy on the show, and in his own words it's made up for TV.
I read elsewhere the cast makes $3,000 per episode and there's only 6-8 shows per season so it's not Hollywood millionaire stuff,
Here's a good write up on Tom Oar; http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2013/09/12/tv-mountain-men-oar/2807417/

But now there are thousands of people that want hand made stuff from Tom.
I've walked past many flint knives on trade blankets because I just don't see a need for such a fragile tool at this point in my gear.
(not trying to diss flint knives)
But it would be neat to have one from the TV "star", :)

My son lives in the mountains of NC, in Asheville, and has a black bear sow with two cubs living in his yard. He lives at the Asheville Country Club, by the way, in the middle of the golf course. Do you suppose The History Channel might want to put him in The Mountain Men? He could use the money.
