TVM finish aged or browned.

I'm going to order a TVM South Mtn. rifle. They offer choice of aged or browned steel furniture, and 4 choices of stain, dark brown, red, coffee, honey.
I'm liking the one pictured on the TVM site, dark stock, aged metal.
Any advice from you TVM owners out there on either. I don't know what the coffee stain looks like. Any comments about, or pics of your gun much appreciated.

My fowler has a "coffee" stained stock, unfortunately, it hides the rather nice maple. Most of my barrels are browned, only one of them isn't. A few years I had a very nice Va rifle with a grayish barrel that I liked a lot. It aged quickly even after a few months.

I have a southern tvm rifle. I left the lock grey,barrel browned,brass furniture,trigger browned. Unfortunately i don't know how to do picts. Don't have a smart phone. You will love it. They make great guns!

I'm a TVM owner, but of their kit . . . I've never seen a TVM built by Matt Advance in person . . .but all the pics I see look to me to be a very dark almost black browning, which I personally like. I'm not a fan of chocolate looking browning, because it looks like rust to me . . . and I can't wrap my head around rust and gun going together. . . but the black "browning" they do, I could live with. I just cold blued my barrel and lock . . .it looks fine, but isn't much protection.

I have an Iron Pennsylvania that I like a lot and which is a tack driver! ... I have it with an aged barrel etc. The super premium maple shows its pattern very nicely with it's red stain. The red stain and aged steel makes a nice combination.

All finish I believe is "rust." Including black/blue/brown. I believe brown requires less protection, but that's just me.

I just got my TVM Early Virginia rile at Christmas. It's got an aged barrel with dark stain on premium maple. I love it.

I have to TVM Southern Poor Boy rifle that I just recently got from them and it is an excellent rifle with excellent workmanship. With that being said I got the super premium Maple as well and the dark brown stain which unfortunately is too dark and doesn't show off the beautiful Maple striping the way I wanted. No fault of theirs. And I got the Aged iron and I think it looks awesome. I will post some pics if I can figure out how.

I have an older model of the Early Virginia with browned barrel and Aqua Fortis (Red?) stain. I think that color stain really brings out the nuances of the maple and looks great with browned metal.

Seeing I'm mainly a hunter, browning provides the most anti rusting protection of all the finishes along w/ rust bluing. The etched, matte finish of browning/rust bluing captures the lube and neutralized rust doesn't rust and it's also non glare.

Some of the other metal finishes require a whole lot of care to prevent rust and a plain polished bbl requires the most care.

Use what you will, but I don't like to spend addt'l time w/ a rust prevention program that is not required w/ browned/rust blued surfaces......Fred

Nuts! I guess I tried to get clever. And it didn't work. We need to do something about teaching folks how to put up photos on the ML Forum. There's a thread somewhere on Using The Forum, I think. Maybe using the search function is enough.

I have the coffee on my rifle it would be too dark
I have the base maple grade and the coffee yis perfect.

I paid lots extra for fancy wood. Upon advice from TVM had the stock stained dark. Waste of money, can't see the grain. My finish is browned. Looks way to new and pretty.

However, the way she shoots, I don't care what it looks like. This one's a keeper.

Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it;

I have a couple of Matt's guns (one iron pennsylvania, and one smooth bore), and mine are excellent workmanship and shoot great. Both are extra fancy maple, and if I pay for that wood, I like a light finish so I can enjoy it. I tend to sit in the woods while hunting and just go over the rifle and really enjoy the grain.

I would have no problem at all with one of their dark finished guns, but would get the regular maple stock for that.
