My main problem, Oldarmy, is that my computer died and I'm trying do all this on a different computer and everything is different. I also don't have a good picture of my Southern and will have to take one next week. I do have it in a "group" photo which I'll try to post.

Thanks guys.I shoot mostly aways offhand and really I like a gun a little front heavy seems to keep me a lot steadier at shoots.Does anyone know what a 38" in .58 1" accross the flats weighs?Barrel?Gun?Figure it has to be a lot lighter than a 33" in .5o 15/16ths across and a solid 3/8 brass rod.lol..Also what about the southern in 36" Seems to me might it look a little out of place on that gun..Was searching all over the sight for additional pics of tvm southerns and info but few and far between..Ray

There is one in the classifieds thats a .50 with a 42" barrel on it. Looks sweet! And according to an old track of the wolf catalog that I have a .58 x 36" with 1" across the flats weighs 5.57 lbs. Hope this helps. Dew

You should really find a rifle with a swamped barrel and hold it before you buy, it is not about weight it's about balance, and looks, I wouldn't buy an early style gun with a straight barrel but that's just me. Now on a southern gun or a tennessee rifle I'd go with a straight or tapered barrel, but I wouldn't go with a siler lock on one of those rifles I'd go with an english style lock such as a chambers late ketland lock. These locks fit the rifle better and are correct, TVM will put whatever you ask them to install on it, since they hand inlet the stock for the lock. The late ketland is known for being fast.

Thanks guys, gonna rethink what I need to get..Tex,did you see my above post? Wndered if TVM's kit has the but plat inletted or to what degree ..Thanks ..Ray

Ray,
We inlet the basic shape of the buttplate, but you will have to actually fit. The kit page at our site shows what it looks like when the stock is shaped and inlet. Hope that helps.

Toni, will you folks be at Davd Crockett days this weekend?

What barrel profile would be common on a late flint Southern Mt. rifle which I think is the time most "Southern Mt." guns represent, or are there "early" Southern Mt. guns? if so how early?

Thanks Toni,I have been the one recently emailing you about the Southern in .58 and asking you a hundred questions..LOL...Ray Y.

Fishhog, the butt is cut to your length of pull then shaped for the buttplate, you will have to fit it yourself. I found the buttplate fitting very simple but time consuming. I was really proud of how it turned out in the end.

Whoops, just saw that Toni responded to you, I've been skim reading. Toni and Matt are great to work with, whenever I had questions about kit assembly Matt would talk me through it, if there are any issues they will work them out.

Depends on the wood. I use Aqua Fortis on curly maple and Honey color on plain maple. Walnut gets boiled linseed oil.
