A few custom flintlock makers have recommended type "F" transmission fluid for all exterior surfaces, including the wood. I use to put this stuff inside my Mercury Monarch in the 70s, but on the outside my flinter? Any thoughts on this. Hmmm??

I don't know if I could deal with the smell of transmission fluid on my gun but, this sure sounds like something that Maxiball would have posted .

Hrrrrumph!!! At least I know the difference between a cat (purrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) and a catfish!!!! :winking:

Even I wouldn't put xmission fluid all over my birddog6 flinters.
Heck I won't even use M.A.P to clean the bore on those flinters as it would cause birddog6 heartache to think of peroxide in those Colrain barrels.
With so manu other proven products on the market I doubt I'll be doing the xmission stuff.

I hear that you can use ATF after hot bluing to stop the process, but I never hear of it being used on fine wood...

All I can say is this..... You take any old auto transmission that has set for a long time & take it apart and see what you will find inside. Rust. Now it has had this fluid sloshed around in it for ? 40 years, you know the pores of the metal have to have oil in them, yet it is still rusting. IMHO, Transmission fluid works good for what it is designed for....... transmissions.

I cannot visualize myself putting tranny oil in the barrels of my guns, let alone on the wood. The oil I use now, works just fine inside and outside the barrels & they already have a good finish on the wood. I cannot see any advantage of putting something else on them. If I were to put them away for storage, I'd use RIG or some other conconction designed for that purpose.

Well, I'm sitting here trying to think of a good reason to use type F automatic transmission fluid and I'm drawing a blank.

I guess if someone told me to use it, my first question would be what's the matter with Dexron II?

Both types are basically 10 weight oil with detergents, anti-foaming and seal conditioner additives in it.
I don't know what those could do for a rifle that a good gun oil couldn't do.

As ATF doesn't dry out, it seems that putting it on a stock would only soak the wood with petroleum and get all over your hands every time you picked up the gun. It would also make dust stick to the surface.

Ah'm a thinkin someone's a tryin ta pull our leg 'bout this, an no, Ah don't think it are the member what started this post.

The only use I can see for Automatic Trans fluid is to pour in a tranny when its leaking.
I am using Jim Chambers oils, both the fine stuff for my lock innards and the thick stuff for the bore and outside. So far I like it very much.

re:
soak the wood with petrolium
:automatic tranny oil is a synthetic - not a petrolium product. Although they may start with a petrolium as a base molecule, it is synthesized into an entirely different moelular structure. Petrolium oils have never worked in jet engines or automatic transmissions due to the elevated heat. As I understand the senario, Synthetics oils have been required for these uses from day one.
: I certainly agree about slathering it all over one of my stocks, though - NOT gonna happen.

I have heard a nearly universal DON'T! from the top dawgs in the game, but one pretty good source said it worked well as a bore cleaner if I recall...

I finally got it!
Type F tranny fluid.
Do you get it yet???
The F dosen't stand for Ford. It stands for flintlock. :haha: :haha: :haha:
