Opinel, the company, started making these knives around 1890, but the knives are essentially copies of a much older French peasant's knife.

I don't want an Opinel, I want one like Rato Rats. I have had Opinels and do not have any more of them, seemed very cheaply made and I gave them away.

I like Navaja pattern knives but the two I have are a little to large for pocket carry, a little smaller would work but I have never found one.
I'LL bet that RATZO RIZZO carried one in MIDNITE COWBOY! lol!. just me being anal. please, I couldn't resist.
That one I have was made by Ben Hoffman at Hoffman Reproductions. I also have a boucheron and belt axe he made. Excellent pieces.

Back when I wrote this, I think I misremembered and mixed up which Ken.
I can't find Ken Hamilton on there either,,, it is Ken Scott that has an account.
Probably your best bet to reach him is to look for contact info on the ALR forum, I can't remember if he is on there himself. I don't know if the direct message system on the old Frontier Folk forum still works but would be worth a try. Also, that is where he had a lot of posts on the subject and where I had private message conversations with him.
I would go there and read as many of his posts as you can on the subject.
I'm trying to contact him directly and its mighty hard to find any contact details.
Also there are no threads on that old forum whatsoever. What ever happened there? Hadn't heard of it before.

It was a really great forum leaning heavily toward actual history, not just muzzleloading. As such member numbers were lower than a gun/shooting forum and eventually it just fizzled out. At least that is my impression of how it slowly died.
So, I just went to Frontier Folk.
You have to be logged in to see anything. And there is really nothing much to see anymore. I did try to send Ken a p.m. about contact info.
I will let you know if that leads anywhere.
Such a shame, there was a lot of great information there from a lot of heavy hitters in the living history community.

That illustration is exceptional. Normally, I eschew artists renditions of things historical as they often (usually) are inaccurate because of artistic license gone wild. But, this one contains so much great detail it could have been made from a photograph from the day, if possible.
