Thanks - I've got a small hardware local that will probably have some little brass ones.

If the hard to fit caps give 100% ignition then how can the hammer be at fault? A stronger main spring may push down a poorly fittting cap and still have enough force to explode it but it sure seems to me your problem is a poor cap to nipple fit.

Someone once told me the hammer on a colt was supposed to stop just a hair short of the nipple, to prevent the nipple from getting beat up if the hammer fell on an uncapped nipple.

I had an old gun where the nipples were sort of tapered and you had to pinch on the caps. That's ok at a range, I guess, although a chain fire might occur, however loose fitting caps are a no no if you want to pack the gun in a holster. I got some after market nipples- Uncle Mikes I think, and never a problem after that.

I have heard of nipples that are of some "in-between" weird sizes, as well as cap manufacturers for these "off" sizes. This sounds to me like it might fit your situation there, Mr. Scout Master! I'll know a little more after the Sunday BP league shoot...and I'll repost what I was able to find-out!

One other thought: Maybe a set of these "in-between" weird nipples came on your revolver by mistake. Maybe you should just buy a new set of nipples that work and throw away the set that's causing you all of this grief!

All the best,

Dave

Thanks for the additional comments.

Yes, I believe that the niples are the thing now. The hammer was part of the problem though to start with.

I have some new nips on the way - Thunder Ridge, but I think I may have fixed the existing ones too.

Only a range session will tell :)

Well, wether or not I "fixed" them will be seen

But, I attempted to fix them by chucking them into my drill press and using a mill file held in a milling vice, I turned the circumfrence of the nipples down a bit so that the #10's will slide all the way down onto the nipple.

The first strike of the hammer was causing the caps to "nailhead" - had a slight mushroom effect on the head and then would reliably ignite on the second strike. The caps weren't seating completely down on the niples.

Should now - they would work ok if I gorilla'd them dowon onto the niples after the first turning I did on them. This was the second turning operation I did - taking a little more off.

O.S.O.K.,

Here's the info on the odd-size caps that I posted earlier: They are size 10 3/4! That's right! As soon as I relayed your misfortune with your new purchase to our BP league Chairman Lance Brunner, he told me about a conversation we had several months ago on the exact same subject!

The odd size caps were on a gun of his, a Navy Arms I think. Told him about your Uberti and he said sometimes the Italian manufacturers swap / sell each other parts to keep up with production, so he wasn't at all surprised to learn of 10 3/4 size nipples showing-up on an Uberti!!

He had the same problem with the #10's needing a second strike of the hammer and the #11's so loose that they would fall off on normal recoil!

A company in Germany by the name of Vorderlader-Zundhutchen makes these 10 3/4 size caps. Lance said for me to tell you he thinks he remembered buying them from Track of the Wolf and to check their web site.

Hope this helps for the next time someone on the Forum has the same trouble with caps & nipples! :winking:

All the best to all of our Forum pistoleros out there!

Dave

:v Zackly what I said in my first post on this topic---It happened to me and I fixed it the way I illustrated except I used a Unimat jeweler's lathe to file the nipples down. 24 curently owned Uberti C&B revolvers all went through the same process before the guns were even fired for the first time. The 1851 .36 Navy Uberti that I just purchased is having issues... It won't ignite the caps on the first strike - does on the second strike though...

I had the exact same problem, with this same make and model that I had ordered from DGW. It was VERY easy to cock. After e-mailing and not hearing anything back right away, I sent the revolver back to them. In the meantime, they wrote me, said they thought it was the mainspring and were going to send me a replacement. As I had already sent the gun back, they replaced it there. Their gunsmith wrote in part:

"Sir,
I have received your Uberti 1851 Navy. I have replaced the mainspring and test fired caps on it several rounds. I have used CCI # 10's and 11's as well as Remington #10 & 11's both with 100% results. I have tried the RWS German caps but it still does not fire all six of these. I cannot explain why. Maybe the caps I have in the shop are just old. If this is acceptable to you I will return the gun to you. ..."

I accepted his expert abilities and took the gun back. It takes a lot more force to cock now, but has fired every time since.

As for DGW being dangerous, I finally gave in today and ordered a Uberti Remington New Model Army. Of course they are out of stock again. :(

Yeah, I think the mainspring had a part in this.

I'm interested in finding out if it's running right yet but havent' had a chance to take it to the range.

Getting ready for a two-week trek at Philmont with my son - with a BSA group of course. This is going to be grueling - the boys picked a "strenous" trek with averages 7 miles backpacking per day. Will be fun though - rendevous, burro packing, logging camp, etc.

Hey Mr. Scout Master, hope that you and the boys have a good time at Philmont. Is there going to be any BP shooting at the Rondy portion of the event?

Take care and hope to hear about your exploits when you get back! :applause:

All the best,

Dave
