Uberti .44 New Army Bummer

I bought a Uberti Remington New Model Army from Dixie Gun Works, and after inspecting it I quickly noted that the sight picture as you would aim the revolver was odd. It appeared as though the front sight was canted to the left as viewing in a normal sight picture. Upon closer examination I noted the following discrepancies. The front sight was wedged in slightly high on the right looking from the rear. Also, the octagon barrel was not screwed in true. In other words, after I taped a small, perfectly straight stainless steel rule to the top flat and viewing it from the fore and aft of the revolver verified that it was not perfectly horizontal-canted to one side. The front sight almost appeared like a banana not standing perfectly verticle in the sight picture.
I called Dixie, and they were very nice and told me to send it back for another one. Has anyone else had this problem? It apears the Italian guy who put this one pience together had too much wine ! Other than the discrepancies noted above it was well made and finished well, almost modern in design as compared to the Colt's of the same era. I plan to use it as a camp gun while in the mountains hunting. Whatssssup?

I own a Pietta version of the Remington. While mine was assembled correctly, I did catch a thread on this forum about 6 months ago that indicated the exact issue you experienced with a Uberti also through Dixie.

In the posted case, if I remember correctly Dixie did an excellent customer service job and got the gentleman a new gun no questions asked.

The Remington is a great camp gun. I used mine last fall while muzzleloading for Elk in western CO. It was a great backup gun to my 50. Lyman GPH.

Hope you get taken care of by Dixie and enjoy the revolver!

I had the same thing with a new Pedersoli Rogers & Spencer .44 last year. The barrel hadn't been indexed properly with the frame and consequently the top barrel flat was canted as was the front sight. This on a gun costing around $1000. It seems no matter who the maker is or how much you pay, it's a matter of luck if the guy putting it together has any pride or interest in his job.

I sent the gun back and they nipped the barrel up so that it was correctly aligned and the fault was corrected. The gun now puts them right in the centre with a 6-o'clock target hold.

Such stuff will happen. I also frequent the Ruger forum and 97% of the people there worship Ruger as the holy grail of quality and durability. But even the mighty Ruger ships a problem gun once in a while and you hear about it on the forum. It is too bad that these bad products ship, but the better companies will replace or repair them promptly.

I have three Uberti's that are all sweet shooters with no problems. I bought all of mine locally so I had a chance to look them over before the purchase. I do remember one at the store, a 1860 Colt I believe, that I noticed had the same problem you described, the front sight was sitting at about the 11 1/2 o'clock position. I pointed it out to the owner who made note of it and put it back in the display case. It is still sitting there. I guess with any mass produced product, even the best quality control will miss something.

I purchased one of the Uberti Remingtons and won our club's pistol trophy with it that year! I was amazed at how good it shot right from the box. The only thing I had to do to mine was file the front post down a little to bring it in the ten ring. I like it much better than the Pietta because of the wedged front post - making it adjustable. Try 25 grains of 3f Elephant topped off with corn meal and Wal-Mart - Super Tech grease. :winking:

I sent the Uberti Remington New Army .44 back to Dixie and also talked to their gunsmith Jessie. He said that the same problem occurs once in a while and will send me another one that he will personally inspect. Their customer service seems outstanding. I'll let you all know how the new one turns out! The Remington design seems to me almost modern.

I had to send a Single Six back to Ruger...one out of three I bought new...where's that Ruger forum?
I've always seen good stuff form Uberti, but as said, mistakes happen...hopefully all will turn out for the best
