Last year, I built the wife a small Kentucky flint pistol, average grade curly maple. I used Wahkon Bay Aquafortis followed with about 25 coats of handrubbed 50/50 mix of Tung oil and artist boiled linseed oil. Came out beautiful.
A horizontal hairline crack developed about an inch behind the tang from the left side to the lockplate panel. It bugged me because I could see it and feel it albeit barely.
Thinking I could just lightly sand the cracked area and then refinish,....turned into a complete sanding off (five hours so far)of the old finish and somewhat down into the "stained" layer to try and make sure I remove the "sealed" layer, so I can restain and refinish the whoooole thing.
As you can probably well guess (and all likelyhood, laughing your buns off), I'm getting in reeeeeal deep here. Should I try to restain with the Aqua fortis? or maybe use the LMF stain?
So far, the wife thinks I know what I'm doing. Lawdy, I'm getting a reeeeeal uneasy feeling here!
