I had friends over for the holiday and they were admiring my Kentucky rifle. Its a CVA and shoots great. They thought that it would be fun to get into BP after listening to me yack about it. I thought for a new one, Lyman or Tradional were probably a good start for under $300. They're deer hunters. Any feed back will help and will past it on. My next step up will be a TC.

If a TC Hawken is of interest, you can usually find good clean used ones in the $225-$275 range on auctions, and with TC's excellent lifetime warranty regardless if original owner or not, it's a very low risk situation

For deer hunting, I'd go with the Lyman Trade rifle. It shoots a PRB very accurately, looks somewhat traditional, is a good length for most types of deer hunting, and falls in your price range.

Go with a TC... they're the best for the money.... no questions asked.

Which auctions are the best to watch for flintlock rifles? Do you have to go through an FFL to buy a flintlock from an auction site?

I check four sites every day...bought and/or sold many times on all of them...

EBay

There are no FFL requirements on blackpowder firearms from the Feds...however, 2-3 states have imposed their own layers of oppressive bureaucracy on their citizens requiring it even thought the Federal government does not...states like New Jersey, etc).

A quick reference is the Cabelas catalog...usually in blue print at the bottom on their muzzleloader pages you'll see the states listed that Cabelas must ship to an FFL dealer.

Does Lyman have a metric barrel or is it the same as others? I thought I read on this forum something diffrent about Lyman. :hmm:

Thanks guys. I got one guy looking at a TC at a local shop. :( I did see a cabelas side lock muzzle loader at another sport shop. They cater to the inlines people. This side lock was a kits on consignment. Now I'm new to sidelocks but I could see this rifle is not going to fire. The hammer does not square up to the nipple at all. It was very poorly put together. I brought it to one of guys at the store and explained the problems. He said it on consignment. That I knew I said. I said who ever buys this is going to very unhappy when he fines out that is doesn't work. $129.00 I said for this? He said yes that's right. I wanted to say $25.00 but I didn't. It's just another case of someone will buy it and have a bad feeling about sidelocks. After he has to spend alot of time and money make it work. :cursing: Just had to vent about it.
