Does anyone have a favorite load for a hopkins&allen 45 under hammer? I aquired one today , only had a chance to put a few rounds through it, I tried 15 gr. of 3f goex, didn't impress me with a group, about 2.5 in. at 25 yds.

The 20 inch barrel of my old Numrich Arms Buggy Rifle measures about .45 caliber groove to groove, not land to land. So I found that it preferred a .433 ball, an .018 lubed pillow ticking patch and about 25-30 grains of Pyrodex. Using the .433 ball was mentioned in the back of the Dixie catalog for .45 Numrich barrels. Is your PRB loading too tight? If not, then maybe your barrel doesn't have the same dimensions as my Numrich barrel.
Even though your shooting a pistol, why not try loading more powder?
BTW, your shot group wasn't too bad at all.

This is a pretty old ( 60's vintage) 440 round ball and 15 thousands patch loads real easy, the rifling is excellant but pretty slow twist. I only shoot 15 gr in my trapper for targets but it has a faster twist. I will up my charge next time out and see if that helps. It's kind of a niffty old gun to shoot, if I can get it to group.

433 / 1 or 18 patch and 25 to 30 grs 3f for target work on all the boot guns. FRED :hatsoff:
