The french were making Ivory pistols for Royalty, thats about all I know.
I seen one before made with Ivory for some Queen.

The Dutch town of Maastricht was famous for these, so they usually go by that name.

There was a pair in the recent Greg Martin auction, double barrel - swivel breech, that had been restocked. They went for a bargain price, way under the low estimate. Only $13,620.

Wow ain't half of it! Wish there was some way to see any marks or proofs, that would help enormously. I'd vote for Italian or Dutch just from what's visible.

Bill is correct as to the origin of these pistols. They date from the mid to late 17th century and as Bill has said are usually associated with Maastricht a Dutch city state and its surrounding area{Aachen,Sedan, and Liege}. There are a number of these pistols illustrated in the H.L.Visser collection of Dutch and related weaponry,{"The Visser Collection,Arms of the Netherlands in the Collection of H.L.Visser"}Vol.I Part 2,Section II Catalogue Nos. 419-440 {PP.470-541}.This collection was undoubtedly the greatest single collection of such arms ever assembled. Two more pairs are also illustrated by Gusler and Lavin in"Decorated Firearms 1540-1870".A third pair is illustrated in "Four Centuries of Liege Gunmaking" No.5c,6c following P.40. by Claude Gaier; and Torsten Lenk{"The Flintlock"}illustrates several in Plates,51,52 and discusses them in Chapter VII.

Beautiful pistols!

Is it me or do the busts have more than a passing resemblance to the Burger King guy??? :rotf:

Now the truth comes out. The King is giving a brace fo these away with any Super-sized Triple Stacker. Use them to shoot yerself fer eating one. :haha:

I think I saw a pair like that at the Metropolitan Museum in NY years ago, made for Catherine the Great. Most memorable of the many fine arms in their collection.
