Use 2F in Piettas?

3F ought to give you a higher velocity grn for grn.

I intend on getting a .50 cal side lock (it's on my Christmas list...if only I can behave that long!) and intend on using only 3F for that and my .45 ROA cap n ball. Having 1 powder makes things easier I believe.

I have a home-made dipper (trimmed from a .357 Mag. case) that throws 26 grains of 3f (weighed). I've never tried it with filler, because I didn't know about fillers back then. I'll bet 26 grains of 3f topped off with a nice breakfast filler would prove to be a tasty load. :stir: I'll try it.
My Hawken .50 Cal. rifle likes 60 gr of 2f or 50 gr of 3f for paper or steel targets out to 50 yards, and does an adequate job on the steel 100-yard gong at the nearby shooting range. I also have a Jukar Spanish-style single-shot pistol in .45 Cal. that shoots fine with 2f or 3f. I use musket caps on both of them to get full ignition with the lighter loads of 2f goex that I tend to shoot. If I eliminate 2f powder, I may switch back to #11 caps. They're cheaper and more plentiful than musket caps anyway. I do like the musket caps, though, because I have arthritis, and the large 4-winged musket caps are easier for me to handle. I guess a good capper would be OK with #11's. (I use a self-modified Cash Capper for my revolver, and it works great!)
Do you think 3f powder would work better with #11 caps than musket caps?

I appreciate your help. I will chrony test the load I end up with. It may be a while before I get around to the testing, because our range is only open in the evenings this week due to range maintenance. I have band rehearsals three nights a week, plus performances from time to time, so daytime shooting is the norm for me.
I hope Santa gives you your heart's desire!

Musket caps are generally hotter than #11 caps. The newest CCI musket caps have been dumbed down due to safety (lawyer) issues with the old recipe. For guns that may have ignition problems with #10 or #11 caps, musket caps can be a solution. I'll just have to try the CCI musket caps with 3f Goex and see how well they work. If they do the job, I'll simply keep buying them and change over to 3f for all three of my guns. Thanks again for the input.

This makes me feel better I have tons of 2f (not really, just a slight exageration) and less than a pound of 3f. I have no worry about 2f in my '60 Army but had concerns for my '51 Navies, 2f will have to do for now. I'll save the 3f for my new '62 Pocket Navy since it's such a pipsqueak any way.

Maybe I'm misreading, but musket caps won't work on a Pietta, or on any gun that uses a #10 or #11 percussion cap.
