Using A Sabot With .54 Renegade

I have been asked to go on a muzzleloader only hunt here in California. I have a .54 TC Renegade. We cannot use lead bullets in California. Can I use a sabot with a copper bullet safely in the Renegade? Are there special loading procedures? I have sent an email to Sam Fadala asking the same question..

My dad used to use them in his TC .54 Renegade, so I would say "yes". He even killed a deer with one.

Go to modern muzzleloader if you want to talk sabots. You’ll get yer knuckles rapped for talkin’ about them here.

Talking about modern sabots on the forum is against the forum rules. This is a traditional muzzleloading forum and plastic sabots weren't heard of before 1866.

There is a company named Thor that offers full bore diameter copper projectiles for muzzle loaders.You might give those a look. They advertise as CA legal but best to check your local fish and game laws.

Go to a local tire store and get some of those California-friendly zinc wheelweights., and cast up a batch of balls. The patch surrounding your PRB doesn't care of it's covering lead, zinc, copper, brass or a marble. Done right, your patch engages the rifling, not the ball.

Pyrodex by composition is period correct. It was first tried in the early part of the 1800's but was abandoned until the 1970's. There is little new under the sun.
