Value of a custom flintlock

Hello Everyone.
I bought this gun awhile back and was trying to figure out a value. Since it is a custom gun I am not sure. Can you guys help me out. It is a left handed 45 caliber. The stock was cracked but repaired (I would have done a better job but, I got it that way)and some boogered up screws but not bad. The bore is nice and clean and shoots great. The only marks on it are that isa a green mountain barrel and Brown. If you guys could help me out I would appreciate it.

I'd guess it's one of Jackie Brown's rifles. Maybe worth 700 to 800 dollars or so.

Thanks, I am not really interested in selling it. I am just interested in its worth. I paid 300 for it but I know I couldn't replace it for that much.

Well, I can't see the pictures either, but as you said, you can't replace it for what you paid for it, so I'd either shoot it and be happy or park it in a gun safe and hope it goes up in value.

Yes it was. I mentioned it in my first post. I could have done a better job of it but thats the way I bought it.

This appears to be a plain southern style gun. Its worth every bit the $800.00 someone else suggested. You could put a new piece of wood on it, with better figure, and add brass escutcheons, inlays, carving, etc. to pretty it up a bit, and that would raise the price, but then it would not be a Jackie Brown made gun. I think you should use it as is, and only restock it if that repair fails. Its worth more than you paid for it, and it will not use that value by using it. Enjoy.

 

I agree--don't restock it, see if you can get the crack repaired better. Good price for that rifle. Nowadays, new, one like it would be closer to $1000 at least. It is an earlier style (than most poorboys out there) southern "plain" rifle, based on the old style (brass?) guard, flattish butt, early lock, etc. I like it.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to get some idea of its worth for insurance. I don't have a problem putting a value on production guns but custom stuff I dont have a clue. I would shoot it more but every time I take it apart to clean it the stock gets more and more worn out around the pin and screw holes. I love shooting it I just dont want to mess it up anymore than it already is. I made some longer pins to pin the stock on and that helped a little.

First, coat the barrel channel and internal mortises of the lock with a good stock finish. Put it on thin, but make sure it seals the wood completely. If the ramrod hole breaks through to the bottom flat, or to the action, remove the ramrod and put stock finish in it, too. Seal the wood from water.

Now, put a good grease, like water pump grease, in the barrel channel to protect the bottom and sides of the barrel from corrosion. Put enough grease in the stock channel so that it oozes out all sides of the barrel after you press the barrel into the stock. Wipe off the excess. Pin the barrel and stock together.

Now, when you clean the barrel, you don't have to remove the barrel from the gun to clean it. Simply leave it in place, while you flush the barrel. You can stop up the flash hole with a stick and rag, or cleaning patch to hold the water in the barrel. Pour about 1/3 the barrel with water, and soap, and use a cleaning patch to pump the solution back and forth. Then upend the gun to pour the stuff out the muzzle into your sink, or drain, or bucket. Repeat, until cleaning patches come out fairly clean. Then rinse the barrel, and then dry and oil it for storage. Wipe off the outside of the barrel to remove fingerprints and dirt, and do the same with the lock. Oil the surface of the barrel for storage( I use NL1000 to lube both the inside and outside of the barrel) and oil the internal lock parts, checking the screws to see they are seated properly and the lock works well, before replacing the lock. Oil the outside of the lock, and wipe off the stock, and you are done. I like to use furniture polish ( wax) on my stocks once a year just to give them added protection. I also wax that stock before going out hunting if there is any hint in the forecast for rain.

You really don't want to be removing those barrel pins if you don't have to work on the barrel or tang, for some reason. Unlike barrel keys, pins are not designed to be taken out, particularly on guns like yours that have no escutcheon plates to protect and support the ends of the pins.

Most custom guns are sold for about three times what they are worth. At least in my view. I do think TVA puts out a good gun for a fairly good price. But most of the gun peddlers don't consider them custom.
