anyone have knowledge of a table listing velocity using load/grade of powder and weight of projectile in long guns (pistols also would be helpful)?
thanks Blizz. :hatsoff:

Closest I've seen to what you want is the Lyman Black Powder Manual. It lists several barrel lengths and a wide range of charges (both FF and FFF) for more common rifle calibers and projectiles, as well as pistols. No data on subs, at least in the edition I have. For the subs, go to the sites or literature from the manufacturers.

You need a chronograph, they are fairly cheap these days, or find one you can borrow. There are too many variables to make a blanket statement on velocity. Unless ball park is good enough.

You can really get nuts doing this velocity thing. IMHO M/L's are a low pressure gun and a low pressure sport. Meanning speed exact speed is not all that important. Added to this is that your gun will probably not match exactly any printed or computerized table or program.

Every gun and bullet and primer combination could be worked out for a given lab and your barrel is going to do just what it wants.

I have a owners manual from T/C for the Fire Storm flintlock and it has data for both Pyro and Black Powder with many different bullet styles.

When I need info I go there now since I am just looking for a ball park estimate on velocity anyway.

And after shooting for a while I stoped worying about velocity and worry about accuracy so what the heck.

Another note about Speer...their #10 manual as far back as 1979 identified 3F as their recommended powder charge for many calibers of MLs, up to and including .54cal
