Hello, I need help with a vent liner that screws all the way into the side of the barrel. Seems to me it should stop and keep from going all the way thu. I’m converting a percussion to flintlock. Any help would be appreciated.

Bye the way the vent is just ahead of the breachplug.

I can't help much without a description of your liner. What is the thread size? When you know the thread diameter and pitch, you can go to the Track of the Wolf catalog and order one to replace your vent liner that threads through. You are correct, the vent liner should not thread through.

Track of the Wolf: https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Search.aspx?search=touch hole liner

A vent liner should have a tapered shoulder on it to stop it from going in, and the barrel should have a countersink to fit the liner's shoulder. You may have to trim the threads back to the barrel wall. I usually measure the wall and file the liner back before final installation. I don't worry about making the liner fit the curve of the bore. If you measure right, the liner will come right to the bottom of the grooves. Patches don't hang unless really tight. Even then I'm going to toss them anyway.

The liners that I have are not tapered. I’ll order from track of the wolf. Their liners look like they have a shoulder. Threads are 5/16-24.

I believe that style of liner, which is a much simpler application of the idea, you're supposed to begin screwing it in, then apply silver solder paste to the remaining exposed threads...then continue screwing in the liner until it is flush with the outer surface of the barrel. Then you apply a torch to the liner until the silver solder paste melts. This then fixes the liner in place. You must, of course, then use a torch to remove said liner when it need replacement.

When this happens the best solution is to use a thread locking compound on it. After making sure the length of the liner is the same as the barrel wall thickness at the liner location, apply the compound and screw the liner in until it is positioned like it should be. Then let the compound harden.

I DO NOT recommend using the Red, perminant locking compound. Use the Blue type or, use some clear nail polish on the threads. Yes. The kind of nail polish sold at the local drug store.

When I did my Bess recently I interrupted the threading of the barrel so as to limit the depth the liner could be screwed in.
Just curious.....Why wouldn't you want to take advantage of the full wall thickness of your barrel? Most liners to my knowledge (very limited) are flush with the bore.
Flintlocklar:rolleyes:

When I installed the vent on my smoothbore, I didn't counter sink and the the vent shoulder still sat flush with the barrel. When you thread the hole, the starting thread usually has enough room to allow the shoulder of the vent to sit tight. Then just cut off the outer portion of the vent if its the type that requires use of a hack saw to expose the flash hole, then file to match the barrel flat.

I’m waiting on some new vent liners from TOTW. They look like they have a lip to go against the barrel. Screw driver slot. Then I’ll have to file down to about .220. (7/8 barrel,.50 cal leaves me with about .1875 barrel wall.

Countersinking depends on the type of liner and thickness of the barrel wall. It doesn't have to be much. Just enough keep from having a gap around the liner. Some liners are straight sided above the threads and will show a small gap around the liner. Especially, if the hole isn't exactly square in the barrel.

Vent liners came about when a plain hole was drilled and got ate out and too large. They are made to last longer then barrel steel. The hole must be all the way through the barrel wall without interfering with the breech plug so planning is needed. Still, when in proper and tight the outside needs filed flush. That will also remove a screw slot needed only once.
I see what is happening with one that goes too deep so a new one will fix it. There needs to be a taper or shoulder for the stop and seal.

Received track of the wolf ventliners. Filed and installed perfect. Now just waiting on lg left hand Siler flintlock to install. Thanks for all the helpful info.
