I was going to mention that and am glad to see someone else did. I saved some dove feathers to use in mine, they work fine and as far as I know are legal to possess.

A friend of mine found a red-tailed hawk tailfeather on airport property and hung it from his rearview mirror. Got pulled over and if the DPS officer hadn't been kind and told him to get rid of that "chicken feather" before another officer identified it as something else and arrested him he would have been in deep poo.
Yes, a dove feather is perfectly legal since it's a game bird. I remember the story of an old man who kept a large collection of songbird feathers and liked to show them to kids. The Feds busted him. They don't take it lightly.

Came across this forged mail. Would love to know how thin I need to file it down to make a fit with Kibler Woodsrunner .50. Love to hear from this great group View attachment 262373
I found a piece of piano Wire works well.
And it comes in the Kibler kit. (Barrel
And thimble pin stock) he say they annealed it. So that’s good. It may be too large a diameter though. I file a piece years ago int a rough square that would work and epoxied it into an antler tip.
WARNING: be careful how you store it in your bad as it will draw blood.
A small piece of cork helps store it.

I keep these guys on the tag end of my priming horn thong which is on my bag strap. Always handy.

The possession of feathers and other parts of native North American birds without a permit is prohibited by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).Apr 17, 2023"
I picked up a number of wild turkey feathers a couple of years ago that the birds had shed. I have kept them since, thinking I will find a use for them sometime.

Am I a lawbreaker?

I did that for a while but found out it's a Federal offense to possess one. Any songbird feather for that matter.

So sad what we have allowed to happen 😢
Tyranny is what this is...and we vote for it.

Lawmakers wasting time and money, making criminals out of folks for enjoying such a simple pleasure as collecting a few feathers!(?)

Meanwhile cats and wind generators kill 1,000s of birds every day...

Geezuz.
You guy's have to bring it to extremes don't ya. 🥴
Did anyone come knock on your door? Did you turn in someone you saw at the range using one?
If you find a feather use it. Just tell the SWAT Team at your door the truth, You found it. The Judge will probably toss out the charge and you'll only be responsible for court fees and towing.(+ the weekend in jail will help sober you up)
If you have 100 feathers and sell them on Ebay, that's a different issue,, or does somehow the collective here not understand that?
How has this been lost?

Like it or not, it's a Federal law. You can break it, bend it, or skirt it as you please.

Yes. We as citizens can do that.
If a Federal or State agent approaches me, and tells me I can not be in position of/or use a feather I have found on the ground while I'm using it. I will apologize to him and drop the feather immediately, thus placing it back where I found it.
If that Federal or State agent, want's to prosecute charges, I would and will, willingly spend the weekend in jail sobering up, and pay the court fees the Judge will allocate to me as he drops the charge.
Reality check.
Grasp the concept yet @reddogge ? Or is a found feather a moral issue for you?
Your right comrade, we all must abide.
et al. ,in this thread, I haven't personally advocated the use of feathers, history has. I said ,,0.032

That fine looking forged nail would make a nice "top of the comb" , butt plate nail on a MTN rifle. I saw an original at the Baltimore m/l gun show 30 yrs. ago with that feature. Don't have to inlet a butt plate as the nail takes all the abuse while loading and cleaning.

Thank you for sharing that. I'm sure that it will be an awakening for all those that intend to violate the law.
Nobody here has ever intended to break a law.
✌️

Reasonable men look at the intent of law and surely using a songbird feather as a vent pick does not constitute a crime. However, tyrants are not reasonable men and will use any law available to subjugate free men.

Like the nail was driven into the butt of the gun instead of it having a buttplate? 🤔 Hmm…

I just use a common paper clip. I straightened out one end. The other end I bent into a loop for a hand hold.
I tied it to my shot bag on a thin, short, waxed cord. It hangs beside my powder measure.

I agree. The common paper clip (Jumbo size) works fine for me. You can just make a loop as stated or get more fancy. I have made them with a "hand hold" by twisting into a clover leaf, or utilizing a coil spring and cutting small loops and soldering them into that clover leaf form. Leather, hemp or linen cord makes a nice attachment method or get fancy and use gold plated brass chain. Why a clover leaf? Looks nice and at my age any help in shooting is a plus.

I have this one for my .50 and .45 cal Flintlocks for several years.
Don't know what "size" it comes down to.
But I will say; it is a great vent pick but like another said 'do not use it like a ramrod!"
You only want to clear the vent, not drill the hole larger.

I also carry a few duck feathers as well.
