Really nice example of a Standard model Gallager carbine. These .50 caliber breechloaders used a foil or paper cartridge and percussion cap. This example has very god metal, with no pitting. Just age freckling. Stock is good plus, with age related dings and initials JAC on right side. Small chip ahead of saddle ring bar. The bore in the 22" barrel is very shootable, with good rifling and scattered light pitting. Action functions as it should and locks up tight. $1500 + Shipping.

I would think so. Seems like I read something about troopers doing that since the foil cartridges were sometimes hard to extract.

The Gallager has part of the chamber located in the frame and part in the barrel. The first motion of opening the barrel and the last on closing is for it to slide straight forward or back so a paper cartridge could be used and I have understood some foil cartridges were issued as the cases tended to stick in the chamber. There could be some leakage between the barrel and frame without a cartridge though.

It's not a good idea. Closing the action with the chamber full of power can cause some to spill out and collect in the bottom of the receiver possibly causing a detonation when the carbine is fired.

I'm pretty sure the troopers didn't care in a hot fight. But not something I recommend for general shooting.
