Dear group,

Hello.

I came across a very odd-looking percussion pistol on a website with absolutely no info on it ... just a picture.

Would any of you be able to identify it and explain its odd form?

Is anyone making a replica of this pistol, by chance?

Very curious. Thank you all very much for your time and have a great day!

God bless,
Joshua R. Smith

That hang tag is from Thad Scott at www.Thadscott.com . I just looked at his site and did not see the pistol listed, so I guess he has sold it. You can email him if you still want to know partuclars about it. Looks to be pretty massive. An over/under?

That type of pistol was called a Howdah. Large bore, double barrel, used to repel dangerous beasts from short range. I wish I had one but they are expensive. I have considered making a single-barrel version out of a cheap sidelock rifle, just to see what it felt like to shoot one.

Found this ..

Howdah Pistol - Very large pistol (usually .60 cal. and up) intended for close-quarters use against tigers. Breech-loaders or muzzleloaders, usually single or multi-barreled, but occasionally revolvers. Carried in the howdah of a hunting elephant, and also by European officers who doubted the efficacy of service revolvers on fanatic native warriors.

used when the tiger tried to get in the basket on the elephant with you. probably got real exciting real fast.
