You are right about that. I work down on the coast but live up in Victoria.

Bill, I'm live near Gatesville which doesn't help you much. I go through Victoria about twice a year on the way to Rockport to fish. Though I have shot percussions off and on for years, I still consider myself an amateur. Just getting into the flintlock stuff.
Welcome to the site, you will learn a lot from some of these folk.

There is a group, Green Wood Long Rifles that shoots close to Lake Jackson.

Never have run into any groups of muzzle loader shooters that weren't a good bunch of guys !! I have attended matches when I couldn't shoot, but still had a good time just conversing with the other guys. There are some really friendly folks in those clubs !!
