Thanks Rusty. I just made a batch and am very pleased with the results. I tried it on a figured maple 2x4 and one coat produced a mid brown. 2 coats a richer brown and 3 costs a nice reddish brown. With a 2 coat clear finish, the figure "popped" very satisfactory..........Daniel

I'm amazed that you guys succeeded in making "vinegaroon"...have attempted this and it just doesn't come out. The solution is a "crappy" dark gray. I've tried rusty barbed wire, nails and "clean" steel wool all w/o success. Any info would be greatly appreciated.......Fred

me too. my wife uses it to age wood for her crafts. makes it look all weathered.

Vinageroon is meant to be used for leather dying and it is grey until you let it dry then oil it with neets foot oil. Comes out a nice Black that wears very well.

Good Morning Fred. The stain I made looks terrible in the jar. (dark and cloudy) and a little better after 4 trips thru a coffee filter. It goes on the wood mostly clear with a hint of grey. I let it sit for a minute or more then hit it with the electric heat gun. It will start to turn right away to a greyish green and then the brown comes out. On samples that had multiple coats, the 3rd coat went on and looked muddy red brick color (yuck) but when hit with the heat it cleared to an amazing rich brown with a hint of red. I have a second batch "cooking" and if it turns out the same, I will mix the two batches and if I like it I will stain my stock.

A good batch of vinegaroon dries black. Oiling it gives sheen and more depth.

Is that on leather?? Cuz mine came out a rich brown on the Maple............Daniel

I have had problems using steel wool due to it being oiled. I have washed it in acetone and still had slow to no success with it. Much better results with rusty scraps, nails, barbed wire, and such, or clean oil free chips.

I used 0000 steel wool, and at the time, had no idea it should be degreased. No problem - dissolved in a few days...

I soaked steel wool in rubbing alcohol and it came out okay (I think) however I saved filings from filing metal- that might have made a difference. I have only used it on leather- I didn't know it could be used on wood. On leather- I thought it only worked on veg tanned leather. Mine comes out black.
