At the range yesterday i was offered some Ox Yoke non lubed pillow ticking strips. I was told it would tighten up my groups compared to the Walmart ticking. It did seem to be alot tighter weave than the Walmart brand and my next 5 shot group which was the last of the day did seem to improve :hmm: Has anyone else found this to be true?

wal-mart ticking is .018 depending on how you use the mic.it does fine in my t/c 50 cal .dont know if this helps your question ,or not.

do you wash the wall mart pillow ticking? I get mine at Jo ann fabric since the wall marts here don't carry fabric no more. I think there is also red pillow ticking that mics at .015 blue at .018 Pocket drill is also good at .012

I use walmart pillow ticking for patchs , the blue strip is .015 , and the red is .018 to .020, I wash my pillow ticking before I cut square patchs out of it ,then I take some of my home made patch lube , heat it in microwave until its liquid , put dry patchs in zip lock bag , add the patch lube and knead it in the patchs , let cool and your done. I use to shoot ox yoke and now I shoot walmart pillow ticking , for me , they both shoot the same .

although i never got all analitical and scientifical, i've used both and i haven't noticed a big difference... now that i think on it, i haven't noticed any difference...

but then again, i'm not that great a shot... i suspect that the real proof will show that it depends on what that particular rifle likes.

gotta go make good smoke

IMHO,
You really don't know what you have until you wash the sizing from the ticking..018 could
well be .015,etc.after washing.
snake-eyes :hmm:

Some guns do better with a denser, or tighter, weave patching. Ox yoke uses some of the tighter weaves available. However, the shape and depth of the rifling is what determines how well and what weave best seals the bore. Some barrels have very deep narrow grooves and that tight weave isn't the best for those barrels. Some barrels have very wide round bottom grooves and nearly anything will seal the grooves.

As they say, each rifle has it's own likes.

I have a gun that shoots great using loose weave cotton flannel for patching. However, the gooves are five times wider than the lands and have rounded corners in the grooves.

You absolutely should wash the ticking before you use it. A very knowledgeable shooter/experimenter told me that washed ticking is THICKER after washing than before. Surprised me, too! A .015 might end up .018! For this reason I'd always recommend measuring the thickness AFTER washing rather than before.

Thanks for the info guys, I have shot Walmart ticking for a couple of years now .I always wash it first because i shoot spit patches and it taste real bad if you don't wash it :barf: We looked at a few of my patches and i thought they looked good :shake: they were just a little frayed around the edges no cuts or holes. But one of the guys said that the patch material was to thin, then another guy agreed with the first guy and then gave me the Ox Yoke material which was alot stiffer & seemed thicker. Now does anyone know where to find Ox Yoke in bulk all i have found so far says it is .005 thickness which i know the material the guy gave me was thicker.I did notice that the OY brand did not taste as bad as the WM brand even with out being washed first. :hmm:

yes, wash pillowtick 2 times in washer.also put it in dryer on high heat weave will get tighter and thicker as said above.

i checked all pillowtick at wal-mart and blue/red/brown were all .018 but as some said, real test is after washing.

i use RED as most use BLUE.RED is for republican which i am but i voted democrat which is BLUE. :rotf: i can find my patchs at range because i am only one shooting RED.

Hmmm, last time (first time too) I got my pillow ticking at Wally World I got the brown stripe - go figure. Seems to work just as well as the big bulk pile of blue-stripe Ox Yoke I was given.

TO each his own, I guess....

Just a heads up on wallyworld.Around here they are doing away with their sewing departments in the store. If you are low on patch material you better stock up while you can.

The Walmart here has a big cloth inventory. But it is 100
miles to the next store that sells
cloth. :hmm:

Thanks Mr. Snake, RMC was the site i was looking at which shows the ticking to be .018 thick in the ad then down below where it shows the price it says it's .005 thick .I have the phone number so i will give them a call to see what the facts are . The WM brand ticking does seem thin after being washed compared to the OY ,however i have not tried drying it in a hot dryer to see if it will tighten it up after washing. But thanks for the info guys i going to order some OY and see what happens if anything.
