This is an english walnut block I have. it's 2 1/2 square and 6 1/2 long. air dried for around 10 years and no checks, voids, etc..

Am looking to see what other people would make out of it.

:shocked2: :shocked2: WOW.

This will sound odd, but, since I can't think of anything practical to make of a piece of wood that size -- other than knife scales, which seems like an awful waste -- I'd simply keep it to look at. I have an approximately 3/4" thick, ten-by-ten piece of walnut -- don't know what exact species -- with beautiful burl all through. I keep thinking I'm going to make sixgun grips or knife scales out of it, but it's too pretty all by itself. I just leave it alone.

That would make a couple awsome box turkey calls, slab it down for knife handles or even belt buckles, great plug material for flattened primer horns, turn it on a lathe into a neat ale cup, sounds cazy but just sand it real smooth give it a nice clear finish n use it for a paper weight.Like Mongrel said its just to darn pretty to cut up, Just some quick thoughts YMHS Birdman

I think knife scales, grip for a revolver or even a small black powder derringer, and matching pen.

I would get a nice laminated steel scandinavian blade and make that chunk of burl into a handle for a very sharp looking patch/utility knife

Something like this perhaps

At least that's what I see in that chunk of burl

Beautiful piece of wood. How about a ball starter, or a bullet block, with some left over

Hello,

I have several various ones and this is the latest. The #1 problem I am going to have is cutting it for anything. Any slight mistake will be like shooting me in the chest.

Anyways. The starter idea would be an interesting thing. it's large enough I could do several things mentioned. knife handles, bullet starter and even the call thing, would have to look at the plans on that one to see what's needed and all.

Great piece. I would have like to see the rest of the chunck it came from. :shocked2:

If it were mine I would first make a set of grips for my 1911 and the rest would be used for knife scales.

But the goblet idea sounds cool too. That would really show it off.

knife, mold handles, or revolver grips, or just sand and finish the way it is, no carving ect. it would look nice sitting on a table or mantle.

that's exactly what im doing with this block.

english walnut around the same size. This is a folding knife I made and I use the block to show off various things.

As for the rest of these blocks, it was a very high grade gunstock and this is 'scraps'

i would love toput that piece of wood on my lathe wow now that would make a nice goblet but i think i would just stare at it for a month before i did any thing with it.

You could grind a set of screwdrivers to perfectly fit the screws on your favorite gun, and replace the handles with that beautiful Walnut.
