What did I buy????

Bought this 12+gauge yesterday, at the gunshow for $300. In decent shape, bore good enough to shoot. Marked T. North Winton on back of lock and oval breech inlay North Winton). Lock fully polished inside. Tastefully engraved……nice clean gun. Looking for any details on it. Internet search didn’t provide much.

Sir, you stole that beautiful gun! The shaping of the breech is exquisite. Sad to say, I know nothing about it. You'll need to take it to pieces to see where it was made, seeing as there is a Winton here in UK and in NY State.

It appears to me to be an English-made gun, could you take the barrel off and take a photo of any proof marks that may be there?

Thanks guys. No proof marks, just a 11 and a breech/barrel alignment scribe. Interesting piece in good shape. It’s got me stumped some. No other marking except same name in rear of lock plate. I’d think Someone would be proud of their craftsmanship. It shows nice.

If not English, then perhaps Belgian. However, the lack of any proof marks is a puzzle. Belgium has required the application of proof marks since 1672.

Only drag is that buggered screw on the tang, but I'm amazed at how nice and tight the lockup is, and how beautiful the overall patina of the barrels and other metal parts is. I definitely would have nabbed this little honey!

There should be proof marks under the barrel near the breach. Sometimes you need to gently clean the metal (the underside) and get out the magnifiers.
Also look for tool marks on the inside of the lock. A lack of marks indicates a better made lock.

I was told Belgium makers were paid a half penny to assemble a lock, so they didn't spend much time on the inside finish.
