Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
My possibles bag contains everything I may possibly need for a particular hunt.
5-4 reloads (in speedloaders)
6-10 precussion caps in a capping tool
A short starter
A 4" RR extension w/cleaning jag
A vent/nipple pick
An extra/new nipple, along w/nipple wrench
A compass
A knife
Some munchies
Do you like to travel light or, like my mother, carry everything you can possibly think of?
A shooting bag is what you carry for shooting, everything else goes in your possibles bag.
Do you want to fix or adjust the lock out in the field? Do you want to swab the bore between shots? If you dry ball would you call it a day or have the tools to keep going?
My "bag" sounds pretty close to Pete's with a couple additions:
A GPS (historically correct version of course)
And a cigar - because once Bambi is hit, if you smoke a good cigar that gives him enough time to lie down. When the cigar is done, you go recover your deer...
(and I use the speed loaders that hold the powder in the top compartment, held in place by the patched ball in the bottom - not that I plan on a "quick second shot" (no deer hangs around that long after you "miss"), but find that the easiest way to carry it all)
Rendezvous Wood's walk or Modern hunting?
Either way as little as possible/only what's needed.
*A small roll of patch,
*A small knife,
*5-6 ball
*Nipple wrench, worm/ball puller
*Small day horn or powder container
For a day of hunting I only carry 2 speed loaders and of course a loaded rifle. I have never needed to load the 3rd shot. Everything else you would have to carry no matter what you were hunting with. I have been hunting with muzzleloader only for over 40 years and most of them with a flintlock. Good luck with you upcoming season.
Jim
PS: where in NY are you located. We just may not be that far apart.
Absolutely nothing but shooting supplies. Spare parts, snacks, everything else goes somewhere else. I don't want ANYTHING but things to get off my next shot in that bag. It all gets in the way and forces you to carry a bag waaaay bigger than it needs to be.
I carry close to what the others listed but I also carry a ramrod puller. I have only needed it once with a .32 cal but it kept the trip from being cut short.
I don't carry a "possible bag. I carry a "certainty bag" when I go hunting. Possibles take up too much room and weigh too much. I call it a "hunting bag".
For this Saturday (1st day deer season):
Six paper cartridge loads of round ball and powder and two spare flints (in a toned tin).
Priming flask.
In a small tin - turn screw, cleaning jag, tow worm, breech scraper, ball puller (all the metal pieces in a little mattress tick bag for quiet), porcupine quills (for vent picks).
Waxed cow's knee.
Single blade (3-1/4") folding knife.
Spare bit of leather for a flint wrap.
Handfull of washed sheep wool for wiping.
That's it. Pen and tags are in my jacket pocket - as is a compass and my fire kit. Also a very good Fenix flashlight - a concession to the modern age.
I'll also have a sheath knife on my belt and a neck knife.
3 speed loaders, capper for my cap locks, or primer and extra flint for my flint locks, alcohol glass cleaners for my glasses or binos, cow knee, short starter, electrical tape (to cover the muzzle), a wind direction puffer, two Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree :slap: .
"And a cigar - because once Bambi is hit, if you smoke a good cigar that gives him enough time to lie down. When the cigar is done, you go recover your deer..."
Invaluable advice other than for its implications for your health.
