Declaration of Independence Banned at Calif School
Wed Nov 24, 2004 04:12 PM ET
By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California teacher has been barred by his school from giving students documents from American history that refer to God -- including the Declaration of Independence.

Steven Williams, a fifth-grade teacher at Stevens Creek School in the San Francisco Bay area suburb of Cupertino, sued for discrimination on Monday, claiming he had been singled out for censorship by principal Patricia Vidmar because he is a Christian.

"It's a fact of American history that our founders were religious men, and to hide this fact from young fifth-graders in the name of political correctness is outrageous and shameful," said Williams' attorney, Terry Thompson.

"Williams wants to teach his students the true history of our country," he said. "There is nothing in the Establishment Clause (of the U.S. Constitution) that prohibits a teacher from showing students the Declaration of Independence."

Vidmar could not be reached for comment on the lawsuit, which was filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in San Jose and claims violations of Williams rights to free speech under the First Amendment.

Phyllis Vogel, assistant superintendent for Cupertino Unified School District, said the lawsuit had been forwarded to a staff attorney. She declined to comment further.

Williams asserts in the lawsuit that since May he has been required to submit all of his lesson plans and supplemental handouts to Vidmar for approval, and that the principal will not permit him to use any that contain references to God or Christianity.

Among the materials she has rejected, according to Williams, are excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, George Washington's journal, John Adams' diary, Samuel Adams' "The Rights of the Colonists" and William Penn's "The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania."

"He hands out a lot of material and perhaps 5 to 10 percent refers to God and Christianity because that's what the founders wrote," said Thompson, a lawyer for the Alliance Defense Fund, which advocates for religious freedom. "The principal seems to be systematically censoring material that refers to Christianity and it is pure discrimination."

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case of a California atheist who wanted the words "under God" struck from the Pledge of Allegiance as recited by school children. The appeals court in California had found that the phrase amounted to a violation of church and state separation.

The very thing that gives them the right to do this (THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE) they banned, go figure...

They need to ban their money too...

I know I'm the one who made the "No Politics" rule for the Forum, but this is way beyond partisan politics. This tears at the very core of how this country was founded. You can't selectively teach the history of America.

Banning one historical document from the curriculum is a very dangerous precedent.

Principal Patricia Vidmar needs a serious history lesson herself. If she's not receptive to that, perhaps she should get the H*LL out of this country. I'm sorry, but I have no patience left for these people.

was talking to my brother in-law who is trapped down in that foreign land called California
he was saying they have banned guns shows and that they are trying also to get the pledge of allegiance banned at sports events as it contains "One Nation Under God "
Said he had a lady try to get him to sign a petition that would stop the national anthem as well,,,, said that it was to violent and the words insulted foreign tourists.

this whole PC thing is getting outa hand .. dont get me wrong guys there are some good parts that needed done but most of them where taken care of years ago.
maybe if the people pushing this !@#$% started losing their jobs it would stop.
And they wonder why it is that when the move out of that state it takes years before people want anything to do with them

rollingb,
hell maybe we should just go ahead and banned education, who knows what nasty things might be learned from it!!!!!!!!!
snake-eyes :: :what: ::

My feeling is this. If you don't like the things that this country was made on then leave. There are plenty of places that feel the same why and you should feel more at home there then here. :sorry: :imo:

I'm not sure the future WILL think! Obviously some of the PRESENT don't! I'm surprized they would allow the mention of George Washington; afterall, he believed STRONGLY in God.I wonder if they have a photo of President Bush hanging somewhere....and if so, shouldn't that be removed since he prays to God openly? Has anybody checked to see when the big earthquake in Ca. might occur?....The way they seem to think out there in La-La land, it may be sooner than they expect .

I had a t-shirt made up once that said:
"True American Minority...
I believe in God
I love my country
I work for my money
and I love my wife!"
T-shirt got alot of attention.

Just courious if this would happen with the "Communist Manifesto"?

California gets more and more outlandish and some other states are quiet eager to follow.

What we are in is not politics, but culture. In essence, we are amidst a cutural war. Sad. I the long run it will destroy the country because there is no idendity anymore.

Well, it happened to the Sumerers, Hetithers, Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Brits...

Every empire rots from inside, not outside.

As my wife says, "the rubber is stretching really far...it's going to snap right back to Ozzie and Harriet"...

We can only hope.

Gentlemen,

This kind of BS is happening to our wonderful country because "We the People..." are allowing it to happen! Unless WE stop this, it will continue to destroy our country.

We must stop this and we won't end it by writing letters to our Congressmen. It is time (should have been done 40 years ago) to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to take our country back. This country was not founded by wimps, but we are letting wimps (and lawyers)destroy it.

What else are we willing to take lying down? What can really be done? I think we all know the answer...

On 9/11/01, the pendulum paused and slowly began to swing back in the other direction. There are parts of the country that haven't gotten the message yet and it might be awhile before they do. The election this year showed that the left is beginning to lose it's grip...and it's none too soon.

Nonsense such as this will not stand. People, even in blue states like NY, are awakening to what they have and what they are in danger of losing. Though they might think they are, school principals and academics are NOT God. Their positions of power and influence will evaporate if they embarass their employers one too many times. And make no mistake, this IS an embarassment to anyone connected with it.

Please refer to us (NY) as the 51% Blue State . There are pockets of resistance and we are opinionated and angry. There is one city with 50% of the state's population that drags the rest of us down struggling. :curse:

Stumpkiller,

It's funny...I had always assumed that all New Yorkers were very liberal. But, my inlaws are from New York and I now know probably 100 people from New York and every single one of them are very conservative...and they are from Manhattan!
Although, they do jokingly give me a hard time about "shooting Bambi". :: That's OK, I give them a hard time about their barbecue!

I missed the politically correct bandwagon the first time it came around years ago. Would not have been any good at it if I had jumped on. I don't believe in it. I don't want to offend anyone but somewhere, somehow, we have to get back to using simple common sense and dump these anal retentive idiots that are trying to enforce equally stupid concepts that other anal retentives made into law.

We just had a big controversy in town over whether or not the American flag should be dislayed in the college classrooms. Pathetic!

IMO, If the "college classrooms" are on American "soil", the question of wether or not the American flag should be displayed in those classrooms,.... is a "no brainer"!!

As for the pricipal in the California school??.... I think Musketman had the right idea, the bit..:)curse:)'er..'uh...lady should git paid with sumpthin 'sides "US currency".

I feel another Revolution comin' on! This #%$@ has got to STOP!!! It amazes me that these idiots are doing everything in their power to remove God from every aspect of our lives, when it was the belief in God that was responsible for the creation of our country! Think about it: The Founding Fathers said that men were endowed BY THEIR CREATOR with certain unalienable rights! This means that basic human liberties are granted by GOD, and that no STATE or GOVERNMENT has the right to take them away! According to the PC crowd's warped philosophy, the Constitution itself is unconstitutional!!! :shocking: Their favorite argument is the "seperation" of church and state. The establishment clause in the Constitution simply states that Congress shall not establish a particular religion, or deny people the right to practice the religion of their choice. It doesn't say that God cannot be mentioned in politics or in public! The phrases In God We Trust and One nation under God are used to give due respect and recognition to the Creator, without whom our country would not exist! As it is used in our government, the word "God" is a universal term. It doesn't specify or ESTABLISH any particular faith! These people need to get lives or get the $%&# out of this country! I agree with Claude, I just can't take it anymore! :shocking:
