What is the "popular" fowler right now?

Those ARE a couple of pretty 16 ga. fowlers. Yeah, 20 ga. smoothbore is a great all-around compromise. Kinda the "One gun" to have. I have many. But there is something to be said for a bigger ga. DEDICATED fowler and I too would probably go 16 or 12 ga. in that respect.

I guess that's an answer to a little different, or more detailed, question...

My preference is for what is now referred to as the Type G trade gun. I like the looks of them.

It is light weight, simple in design, the butt plate, trigger guard and nose band are easy to make yourself.

My 20 ga. with 38” barrel handles well. I use it for Turkey hunting.

My 28 ga. with 42 inch barrel is my round ball gun because I shoot a lot. It is barrel heavy because it was bored on a twenty gauge blank. It seemed like a good idea but it was not. I would have been better off with a sleeker or at least shorter barrel.

So by now you know the answer, to your question. The most popular one is the one “you” like, because it is the one you will shoot the most.

The thing about fowlers is that you have to make double sure the barrel Tapers properly if it s Oct. to Rd. barrel. It will feel and point better.

I have a center mark tulle and a track NWG, and hardly shoot my rifle guns now. Both are light, good shooters and easy on the eyes. I have thought of making a southren style smooth rifle, but right now its just an idea Im kicking around. I find a smoothy does every thing I need.
Real men ( ie: guys who are two years older then God and ware bi or tri focal glasses) shoot smooth bores. Smooties being great...Some one says 'wow you hit that-fill in the blank' you can say words to the effect of practice, load workup, and general experince can make a smoothy a practical weopen. If some one says "I cant believe you missed that" you can say "wagh I am shooting a smooty for the sport. any ding a ling could hit it with a rifle.

My smoothbore barrel is not tapered. And while I like it very much and consider it great for deer and turkey/squirrel, it IS NOT for upland wing shooting. For pass shooting it should work just fine; but not for shooting requiring a fast swinging gun. In fact, I refer to my smoothbore as a "musket" for that very reason.
