What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to a club shoot this morning . Shot my Traditions .50 cal percussion rifle. It did real good. I like the sights and trigger on this rifle and it hangs well for me.

I finally got out to shoot the traditions Frontier kit I put together last winter.
.490 PRB over 60 gr Goex 2F put 4 out of 5 into a 6” cedar round at 75 yards (#5 went into the trees when I flinched on a hangfire). After the second shot the ball was getting tight so I wiped it with a brush, between shots after that and still busted the plastic ramrod seating the 5th load..
I guess I’ll be splitting some hickory to fashion a new Rod.

Since 80 year old eyes no longer see iron sights well I dug out my remaining T/C firearms and all their accessories and sorted them out getting them ready to see about selling. That was the extent of my muzzle loading stuff done yesterday.

I made some bore butter 1 part beeswax 4 parts olive oil. I saved some in a tin and pre-saturated about 50 patches with what I had left over.

I am now attempting to replace the spring on an old powder flask. I am unclear how to get the mounting ring portion off of the stud on the top of the flask. Ideas? The stud position is only 3/8 inch from the mounting stud and does not appear to match any of the pre-made springs on Track of the Wolf. I may be cutting and grinding a new one out of spring steel stock. I purchased this flask at an estate auction back around 1977 for my father. I have no idea if it is anything special, but I'm planning on trying to make it functional anyway.

Does he make any our of iron? It would be nice to brown or fire treat it to match the gun hardware.

Probably could but don't want to drill and tap/alter them.

I have eye problems too. Shingles attacked the optic nerve in my shooting eye. Can still see but blurry and there's no way to see the sights and the target. I resorted to mounting a red dot sight which solved the focus problem. Mounted it with high temp permatex gasket goop. Give it a day + to harden and the sight is going nowhere, BUT you can remove it with a razor blade if needed. May not be period correct but it keeps me in the game. The fellows that don't like varying from period correctness can just scratch their mad spots. I'll stick with still being able to shoot.

Got some Xylenes today, purify some sulfur.

I bought a pound from Walmart. We will see how it works.

If you need sulfur for a soil amendment or other purposes and live in a rural area you can probably buy 40 pounds at the coop for what a pound costs at the garden store or Walmart.

had a total old timers brain fart yester day and filed the front sight to lower the POI! 70 years of "down for up" just blew clear out of my empty head. new sight made and on so will see where it is shooting today.

completed my forth and final pineapple patch box frame, hinge and door. The first 3 were a learning curve till I broke out the jewelers frame saw. Very happy with the result. Then, still had some day left so I began filing the draft around the edges of the frame and lock plate and a couple of other items needing inletting. Almost have all the furniture made and cleaned up for my WKSU masters class next month.

Stopped at several shops Trying to find No. 11 caps looks like next weeks shoot will be limited. I gave my friend a 50 cal sidelock and all the caps I had. He’s a new shooter and is really excited about everything. The situation with supplies is getting old.

Shot my April contest target with the new flintlock. Reworked the stopper in my buffalo horn so it seals tighter. Repaired an short starter.
Also tried a little experiment; 50 grains Triple 7 3fg in the barrel, and some in the pan....kaboom. No ball or patch cuz I was near the shed at home getting ready to clean after shooting all morning, but all the powder went off. I had already semi-cleaned at the range so I doubt there was any residual BP to ignite. Interesting.

Last weekend I disassembled my longrifle and blued all the metal. I rubbed it back a bit with steel wool and I am very pleased with the result. Today I took her back to the range to sight her in again. It was a beautiful warm day. I had the range to myself and I shot until I ran out of powder.

It was a good day.

Showed a young fellow of 20 years my Great Western Gunworks Rifle and an Original Fowler. Showed him some of my T/C collection and a couple of Custom rifles. Invited him to come down and shoot, hopefully sooner than later. Shared some deer summer sausage and sent 1/2 a roll with him back to college.

Yesterday I let a guy shoot my flintlock, he had never shot one before. He was shooting some black rifle with a scope (sorry don't know my black rifles at all, just the old Man From Uncle one)...anyhow he thought the flintlock was very cool.

glued the base papers on 50 Hahn Sharps tubes
Bore sighted the Sharps Sporting Rifle to check alignment on the new front and rear sights.
Looked good so I will shoot groups in the morning.
