I am still making n finishing antler powder measures. I also learned that older antlers that are left outside become brittle n weak n will split from drill bit force. I need to find some new sheds to work with. I got a 40 gr n two 25 gr measures finished today

Annealed some old files and other metal for use in the flintlock pistol project and for a patch knife. It is a small kiln but works well enough.

Been working on my rifling machine little by little. No pictures yet, batterys are dead in camera and no cell phone.
I spent yesterday fixing a friends mower. It would not shut off unless he clamped the fuel hose. I told him mice. He insisted on spending $28 for a new switch though. i made him clean all the wire plugs but had to make many trips home for cleaners and grease plus tools, he has nothing or can't find tools. Then pulled the top cover to find a huge mouse nest and a chewed wire. I had to come home again to solder and take back wire splices and more tools but I fixed it. He was ready to spend another hundred to have the shop pick it up and fix it.

Started engraving a horn today. I didn’t realize what I was getting into! Eight solid hours and half way there I think.
It seems this horn is harder to scrimshaw than others. I have had a challenge with my stylus skidding on the surface and not scraping as usual. Makes for painstaking work.
Gootness! That's some mighty fine looking work.

Pathfinder beautiful horn. I am a novice in scrimshaw, did you scribe all the work? And if so, what is your technique to get the solid fill so full of color? I always have light areas between the scratches in the fill area.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim, thanks and yes I scribed everything on that horn. It was a long job! Not sure what you mean by “ solid fill” ?

I have been wanting to try a short starter with a flat head, as opposed to a ball. It should fit in my shooting pouch better. Today I made one from a piece of oak, a hardwood dowel, a piece of brass tubing, and a brass rod. All joints are glued and pinned.

For stain I used Fiebing's medium brown leather dye, then I finished it with two coats of Watco Danish oil. Tomorrow I'll rub on some Sno-Seal and call it good.
