What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Picked up a 34" GM .36 rifle barrel with percussion lock with about 1/2 of the hardware for a build at a gun show.

Shot the smoothbore match today. Now time to clean guns

Wind has been crazy yesterday and this morning. Was hitting over 80 mph during the night. Calmed down to 30 now. No chance to shoot till Wednesday.

Was out ringing some steel with the Frontier flintlock. Weather warmed up a bit, snow gone except in the bush. Drilled out my touch hole recently and the improved ignition speed is noticeable. I'd had a few pan flashes now and then, but no more. Was wearing electronic hearing protection today hence the pirate bandana...

I made 100 paper bullets .44 today, getting ready for a trip to the range.

Bench shot two .36 caplocks testing loads. I tried some .353 balls from a Lee mold but they were too tight so I retreated to the .350 ones I have been shooting. I use the .353 balls in a .36 flintlock having Douglas barrel. It was a bit cool and damp but I really needed to get out of the house. There are few better ways to relax than spending a few hours shooting a muzzleloader. Oh, I did get some comments on my smoke. A couple of regulars comment on how there was less smoke with my .36 guns than the larger bores I usually shoot and implied less smoke was better.

Took my .32 flinter to my range and worked on loads and tweaking sights.
I've discovered that after 38 years of burning welding rod that the thing that needs tweaked most are my old eyesand that I've got to locate realllllly big squirrels.

I fiddled around with a little priming horn I'm working on. Decided that I'd install a fill plug in the base by threading the base wood and a wooden plug . A test with a piece of walnut and a hickory dowel didn't work out very well. The walnut took a pretty good thread but not the dowel. Also tried a poplar dowel with the same poor result. Maybe a pipe thread would work but instead I got on TOW and ordered a brass threaded plug.

Hi Friends, I determined today was a good to puck. I did some home brew black powder compressing. I’m starting to get some pretty good results from the methods I’m using. Good velocity and relatively clean too, and it’s not $35-$45 plus tax and shipping either.
I also finished up a nice little powder horn I had on the bench for a month or so. Simple and traditional in design . I’ve got to get the woven cotton strap done next. I’m retired, so tomorrow is just another fun “Muzzleloading” day.

Had a little time to shoot today, tried tracks mink oil on my patches for the first time and am very happy. I had time for 29 shots and didn’t swab the bore once. I could have kept going. I was shooting a 45 flintlock with 60g 3f shuetzen.

Hey Longcruise - pick up a walnut dowel at the hardware store and thread it coarse - I used one for a small priming horn and it worked great, but I think it is only threaded about 6 TPI. Might also try applying a few coats of penetrating oil like Watco to firm up the wood before threading it.

Getting old is not for sissies...lol...I put a rifle styled front sight on my trade gun I'm building...ha ha Yep noticed it right away...After it was all soldered on...lol

Picked up this gem at the Tulsa gunshow over the weekend. Pedersoli Bess, likely made during the Bicentennial. Excellent bore with only minor surface rust on the exterior that cleaned up nicely. Excellent spark. Paid 600 for her.
