I set my percussion rifle on consignment and ordered a fifth flintlock in two months.

My friends think I am crazy… Probably.

This fifth rifle is a 50 cal with a 26in barrel. I am thinking it is the perfect truck/boat gun if I can get it to shoot well. It is still a week away. The agony again.

I shot my Kibler smr today for the first time. These are my first five shots at 25 yds off a rest. 30 grains fffg, .350 ball and .015 pillow ticking. Pretty happy with it. Shot at 50 yds then. Group opened up some. Still low. Will file front sight down and shoot it again. Can’t wait for squirrel season in a few weeks!

Made some progress on my nephews horn this week! Still need to do some filing, scraping and chisel work. I’m thinking a gray dye for the lower portion…or just polish and leave as is.
Hers some designs to scratch onto your horn got others all big money at auction and while you are at it he would love a $20,000 tomahawk Bonhams auction San Francisco 2014

Well,

After all the ball board discussion, I took and end piece of the walnut I found and cut it up. I’m not really a wood working guy but I figured I would use these to start playing around with it little bit and see what happens. Got the holes drilled and now I’ll start shaping and playing around with some light carving and such. Will probably give most of them away. Don’t worry the carved ones will probably end up in the wood stove! 🤣

Well,

My carving still looks like a 3rd grader art project but the wood looks Ok.

Today I took the .58 back to the woods. Of course forgot the pre measured charges. I did have some ffG Triple 7 so I shot about 8 rounds of 95 gr at 5o yd. Maybe 3" group. Then I found a pill bottle full off 1FG 3 shots at 50 yds, 110 gr. Less recoil 2 touching and 1 1bout an inch away. 1/2 the group. Gonna go back ready to see exactly what I can get done with 1F. Very pleased, all out the window of the Corolla too! Shooting 8-10" high but we will get out 100yd and see where it is before adjustments.

Then I shot the ol 1849! What a hoot. 3-4 inch group at 10 yds Done cleaning.

I understand one of my friends could not understand why I was “going backwards “.

I was inspired by this very discussion enough to make some paper speedloaders or shot cups. I don’t know what to call them but I cut a brown paper shopping bag into a couple 1.5”x3.5” (?) (approximately) and rolled them on a perfectly round punch on the diagonal and glue it with a craft glue stick and I trimmed the excess paper off with a razor knife. I used blue painters tape to let these four inch or so 20ga paper tubes dry overnight.

The next day I fooled around with cards and wads and such and decided it was way to tricky getting them seated properly because the inner diameter of the tube is actually smaller than the actual bore diameter. I ended up using a wad of lubed tow followed by and ounce of #6 shot and another wad of tow. Then I had about a full inch or more of paper tube left that I folded flat with the glue stick and then folder the paper flap over itself twice so I ended up with a doubled square of paper bag material at the top.

I wanted to incorporate powder into the program but it was too messy and my tubes were too short.

At the range, I measured powder and just dropped my shot cup down the bore and tamped it enough to press the paper bag material into a seal similar to pressing an overshot card into place.

At 25 yards it patterned great. Good enough for me anyways. My lube was a mixture of bore butter and olive oil (because that is what I had at the time. Unfortunately it was absorbed by the whole paper suppository which discolored it but wasn’t necessarily a bad thing- more lube is good.

Attached is a picture of the assembled project and a sample target from 25 yards. Don’t mind the extra 45 cal holes as that was round ball from a different gun.

Finishing up my Kibler TMR today & ran into a ramrod problem, it doesn't fit. ? measured the rod & it's 21/64 th's , the hole in the rifle is under 5/16 so I had to do some scrapping for a fit. took some trial & error but it now works great. thinking about doing another in the near future?? depending on funds

Very nice shooting! I will say my southern mountain rifle is a nice shooter I can almost hit anything. I have a nice Isaac Haines 50 caliber I’m all over the place. I have to settle down and get it shooting. Seems to shoot low with the stock sights and is probably configured for 75 to 100. Lollipoping the target is way low at 45 yards. That’s about as far as I can see so I don’t need more. I was thinking id order taller front and rear sight. Right now the front sight is pretty low I’m going to take it down a bit more to see how much it moves up. I guess those rifles were intended as configured to be longer range. This is a Track of the Wolf kit Im not sure if there were different sight options but obviously they can be changed. Just worried about it looking funny with tall sights but if you can’t put it on target it’s useless and certainly not a wall hanger despite its good looks

Getting ready for the North Carolina State Muzzleloaders shoot coming up Sept 9, 10, 11. Built and have practiced with my 40 cal cap lock on a new set of cross sticks, but …I think the dimensions (40” ) were designed for younger shooters. This 72 year old body don’t bend that way anymore. Also shot my 1863 Bridesburg musket at the 8 ring 100 yard target, off hand, that one always is my worse. Tried both 2F and 3 F in my musket, shooting .570 rb .015 patch, 70 grains at 100. Seems to prefer the 3, report and recoil with the 2F seemed weak. Both Goex.
