What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well yesterday was the last day of turkey season here in NC. Unfortunately I did not take one with the flintlock this year but called and saw a lot of turkeys, gained a lot of experience hunting them and most importantly had a great time with my son in law doing it. I was with him with my 20ga/.62 flintlock smooth rifle when he took this one. Can’t wait for next year!

He will be my “guide” next year!

Saw this cool tree in the ”turkey woods” that had grown together about 5 feet up! Reminded me of those walking trees in Lord of the Rings.

I found some lead sheeting at a scrap yard I have connections with yesterday. They said it came from a Doctor's radiology lab. They had just a bit over 100 ponds, the price was very reasonable, so I took it all. I spent part of this morning melting it down and cleaning it up, then poured it into 50 pounds worth of ingots. I saved half of it for my buddy GaryPL. He just got us several pounds of powder on a group purchase.

After I cleaned up the patio, I drug the ingots down to the basement and spent another couple of hours breaking in a new Lee .457 round ball mold. I managed to cast about 160 round ball before I decided to spend the rest of the day sitting on my backside. Not a bad day at all.

I built and mounted a wood under rib and mounted my ramrod pipes on my Tennessee half stock that I’m building.

fired the New Englander .50 today with R.E.A.L. conical. it shot PRB into a kinda pattern so i wanted to try it with conical.
using an over powder patch and swabbing after each shot, it shot to point of aim. had to shoot between down pours. rained so hard it washed the stickon bullseye off.

Put new leather scales on my throwing knife. I had missed so much the original leather ones were pretty ratty and the duct tape was definitely not period correct. Had a scrap of stiff leather that came in a grab box buy from somewhere that was just right for knife scales.

I was in the woods with my fowler after turkey today. I had four young gobblers across a field and they resisted my best efforts to call "come on over and see me, big boy". They would walk back and forth and stretch their necks out for a look but would not come closer than 100 yards. Perhaps in turkey language it was sounding more like mother saying "get over here and clean your room".

Started cranking out some paper cartridges for the 1860. Think I’ll work up about 20 or so.

Finished a breech clout I started yesterday. My sewing is getting better and it turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. Made one moccasin (Wandering Bull Pucker Toe kit), will do the other in a day or two. Went outside and shot a few arrows and threw hawk and knife. Came back in the house and the doorbell rang. USPS dropping off a .440 Lyman mold and handles. I bought it mostly for the handles as I have a Lee six cavity for seriously making .440 balls. Ordered $200 plus stuff from Crazy Crow. Surfed the ML forum. It was a good evening.

Relined my old ear muffs with some thicker foam rubber packaging that I had on hand. They are alot more effective now.

Hanging out with my cousin in Great Falls MT asked him if he knew of any lead to be had. Well yes I do. Got some nice soft ingots and sweet little cast iron pot.

Cleaned up my cap and ball 36 then cranked out a few loaders. Not any period correct but work well. Dump the powder load and chase it with the patch and ball down to seat. Also, whipped out another short starter. Had some extra sheds laying around. Keeps me out of these Texas honky tonks. Ha.
