I actually got out and worked on the fowler this morning. finished inletting the lock. After that was put to bed I started cleaning up the butt plate.
got the rough edges knocked down and started to sand the thing. Have I ever mentioned that i detest metal polishing? decided that was enough achievement for the day and got out my birch stocked .54 flinter.
Fed it 60g of fffg garnished with a .018 bear fat lubed patch and a .530 ball.
It coughed up a 10 shot chorus of notes on my 6x8 gong at 50 yards.
this rifle is the one I refer to as the ugly duckling. It was an attempt at a full stock flintlock Hawken.
It shoots amazingly. so well i don't use double grocery bags to hide it anymore!

Dip-lubing .44 cal conicals:

I've found that pre-dip-lubing .44 cal conicals prior to loading into paper cartridges can be problematic because dip-lubing tends to result in excess lube over the entire bottom end of the bullet that's supposed to get seated into the paper cartridge, but lube and glue together are not very happy campers. I discovered that an empty .45 ACP casing works really well to strip the excess lube from around the circumference of the bullet, leaving the lube in the grooves untouched, and then with just a little extra manual wiping here and there, results in a conical bullet with a relatively clean base that should glue fairly well into a paper cartridge casing:

Close to running out of cleaning patches so Evil our cat is guarding the old flannel shirt I was going to use. But I still got some done without any bloodshed. Her claws are mighty sharp.
