Neighbor called me on the phone from the woods in a snow storm. He said he had a flint lock season , five point birthday present for me. Dropped everything , went over , and tagged the critter. Got it out of the woods , hung it up , and skinned it out for tomorrow to finish making freezer meat. Thanks to my friend.

The big Italian and the Aussie had a casting workout today. We're warming to each other. He tells me he likes to get real hot before he performs! Once warmed for five minutes on the cooktop, he was casting shiny beauties with good fill out. At 640gns apiece (dropping at .579), he empties the Lee pot pretty fast. We produced 55 all up. I'll size them to .576.

It was a cold frosty morning in central Kentucky! Clear and crisp with a beautiful sunrise! I walked out my back door into the fields and woods! Frozen dirt crunched under my feet as I tried to quietly walk through the woods in pursuit of small game! First time in the woods with my PA Fowler that was recently completed by fellow member Jack!
It was a good morning!!

Thanks Jack! I jumped it up on the edge of a field! Saw four squirrels, but was never able to close with them. Also saw a coyote, but it was about 120 yards out. I figured that was a bit far for number six shot!

Checked my flintlock I cleaned a week ago. Noteworthy because I cleaned it differently this time.
I have a tough time plugging the vent hole and end up with water running down the lock and stock to the floor. Just can’t seal it up. So this time cleaned it horizontally with soaking wet patches. Then a soaked alcohol patch, then dry and lube. Paid extra attention to the vent hole through to barrel with wet pipe cleaners and then dry/lube.

Worked great, no issues, clean bore with nothing in there but Ballistol.

It has become a tradition that my son and I go duck hunting on New Year’s Day. I’m using my Pedersoli 10 gauge to good effect. Today we collected 9 ducks and called it a day; that’s a lot of good eating. My little Border Terrier has made about 30 retrieves so far this season. Yea i agree with the cold. It took me a while to get warmed completely up on the way home.

I was taking my lock apart to clean it good and grease it since it will be a while before I can shoot again and when compressing it with my spring vise, it snapped. Luckily I have a spare and already have it replaced.

AWreis, a tip on the main spring removal. pull the cock to full, mount the mainspring vise on the compressed spring, release the sear and the mainspring is loose without additional compression.
saves me gallons of nervous sweat when removing an irreplaceable spring!

I plug the vent hole with a toothpick coated in beeswax. Works fer me.

Took a flinter off the wall and set up on the back porch for shooting. Had left some plastic liter soda bottles of water out overnite and they made for frozen targets. The NNW winds are not laying down and I don't want to chase stuff through the corn stubble.
Was pleased with my dozen shots and the busted targets were easy to retrieve. Wife was out running errands so had the kitchen to myself for cleaning the rifle with no kvetching.
Seasoned a strip steak and set it on a plate inside a cabinet to warm to room temperature. Washed and chopped two nice heads of rape. Readied a couple of potatoes to bake. When she got home supper was mostly prepped and I was settled in with some single malt reading history.

Sounds like a wonderful day. I'll follow your lead except I'll wash it down with some Makers Mark 46.

We have a 5th grade teacher that asks parents to bring their students out for the day to the Mefford House, a log cabin built in 1786.. I spent a lot of time off & on all day talking about the frontier, the guns, the tools, the weasel, the spinning wheel, etc in the log cabin to the kids. They had a good time dressing with period correct outfits and dipping candles. Here are a few pics the event........
