I would like to put a peep sight on an older cva mountain rifle. I put a lyman 17A globe on the front end and want to go with a peep on the back.
What would you recommend if it were your gun?
IF there were ne that would mount without much modification, that would be all the better.
I have heard of one for the H&R buffalo rifle which is a wrist mount, all wood/no metal to attach to.

I'm not familar with your rifle, but if you have used a lyman globe why not continue and get lymans' peep as well. I have one, and although it is not very authentic, it does a fanastic job for hunting.

Lyman includes specific instructions for alternative mounts as well as two adapters.

great advice!,
Which model did you go with and I am assuming you are speaking of tang adaptors?
My cva has a fairly short tang.
What did you brand of rifle did you mount onto?

Thanks,
Brett

I have a mountain too and was thinking of the same thing, the lyman I belive has the short tang also, if you try it let us know. You dont have to but that other sight you need to inlett it into the wood give it a little more strenght. Fred :hatsoff:

I like the TC peep. The Lyman is a big ol' bulky thing that kinda looks out of place on a sidelock (just IMHO). The TC doesn't draw nearly as much attention to itself. Both are great sights though. TM

I have the Lyman 17 in front of the Lyman ML 57 rear sight mounted on an Investarms Hawken. Works very well, tightened up my groups 50% @ 75 yrds. What some others have said is true, the ML 57 is rather bulky and not very authentic looking but, it does what it was designed to do.

I have one of these on my Haines and it works well for me. Low profile, authentic looking, and I have numerous apertures. http://www.trackofthewolf.com...d=14&subId=167&styleId=770&partNum=RS-MA

I HAVE ON 2 OF MY M/L T/C HUNTER PEEP BUT WITH THE LYMAN GLOBE ON THE FRONT THE T/C HUNTER PEEP ON THE TANG MAY NOT GIVE ENOUGH ADJUSTMENT.I KNOW THE FRONT SIGHT GOBE COMES IN 4 DIFFERENT HEIGHTS,THE TALLEST ONE AROUND.580 AND THE SMALLEST .404
I THINK YOU WILL BE O.K. IF YOU MOUNT THE T/C PEEP MORE TO THE FRONT OF THE TANG.I HAVE MY PEEP BACK ABOUT 1/2 INCH FROM THE FIRST TANG SCREW SEEM MORE THEN ENOUGH EVEN FOR THE .580 GLOBE FRONT SIGHT.

Brett, I think your CVA Mountain Rifle tang would be like the tang on My CVA St.Louis Hawken. It's very short and almost straight. I don't think the Lyman or the TC peep sight will work on the CVA Mountain Hunter. I think you need to be sure and check out the angle of the aperture of any peep you try to put on that short tang. It seems to me you would not be able to see the front sight through the aperture.

excellent input Ironwood,
didnt consider the angle and drop.
I did notice in a catalog, the TC sight typical to most newer guns with a peep arpeture instead of the standard V and notch. This would work for me as I have replaced the rear sight with a generic of the style.
Anybody know where I could find this item without having to purchase the entire rear sight asembly?

Brett

If for some reason I felt I needed peep sights I would try to research and find a style that was available at the time that is represented by the gun I was going to install them on.
