My friend was given a Hawken style .50 caliber Spanish rifle. He has assembled and repaired the lock now, so all that remains to make the rifle shootable is a nipple. The rifle came with no nipple. The name on the barrel is "Springfield" It has only one wedge holding the barrel on. It also has a drum style ignition, and Frank says the threads look good. I have never heard of this rifle, but I will bet that someone on this site will know. Oh; the lock is smaller than one normally sees on this type of rifle.

Track of the Wolf's catalog says the Spanish made CVA's, Jukar's and similar guns use a 6mm-1mm or 6-1mm thread on their nipples.

I know that CVA says their rifles use those nipples Zoni but I recently went and bought a new nipple like that and it didn't fit my CVA Mountain Rifle. The rifle doesn't say Made In the USA on it. The shop where I went tried several different thread sizes and didn't have one for my rifle. Figure I will take it to a hardware store to figure out what it is. So my advise it the OP........ Take the gun with you( or at least the barrel) when purchasing a new nipple if at all possiable. Greg. :)

The stock Spanish rifles take a 6mmx1mm.
The CVa MR USA marked or not all took a 6mmx1
If yours doesn't,, I'm curious as to why not,,
Is the 6mmx1 too small? If so, then someone may have oversize tapped it for another size.
Oversize nipples and taps are available beginning with size .255 x 28 (that's a 1/4x28 common nipple oversized .005) then increase to .275x28 in .005 increments. So while your trying to find out what the thread size is by taking it to the hardware store don't forget to check those .005 thread increment sizes.
Or, with the CVA MR being as old as they are your drum could be damaged,, previous owners are not all ML wizards and they may have forced the wrong size nipple in there and buggered the threads.
You should look carefully at the threads, a magnifying glass and good light will help.

The CVA 6x1mm was too big for my gun. I just touches up the nipple I had with a belt sander slightly and put it back in the gun. I pinch the cap to make sure it fits snug now. That bad nipple cost me an easy shot on a buck this year! :). Oh well, I knew better and took that gun that day anyway!! Dopey me! :). Greg

I have a 6-1 mm in my cigar box. I will take it with me when I visit Frank to see if it fits. I bought several of various sizes when I was trying to fit a new old stock Belgian barrel made in the 1890s. I eventually retapped that one to a standard SAE size. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks to all.

If one of you guys who tried a M6-1mm threaded nipple, only to find it didn't fit could accurately measure the outside of the thread diameter and post it here, I would be interested in knowing what it is.

By "accurately", I mean to within a few thousandths of an inch.

There are two common thread sizes that are fairly close to being the same.
The 1/4 inch UN series thread has a outside diameter (major diameter) of around .236-.249

The M6 thread has a major diameter of .228-.235

They're saying the nipple is/was too tall.
The threads seems to be ok but at least Critter Getter just ground off the top of the nip to fit the hammer height.

I indeed did grind down the height just a bit to make it work but the 6mmx1 that I bought to replace the nipple was too big of a diameter to work in my rifle. I don't know the size as I have nothing to accurately measure the nipples but visually I could see the difference easy enough and there is no way the 6mmx1 would screw in to that hole!! Greg. :)

my CVA Mountain rifle and pistol both use the same size nipples, I measured them with a micrometer and they are .2310 inches

Ok :idunno:
Then the drum you have on your CVA Mountain Rifle is not the factory drum.

The original nipple on mine measures .226 it can be installed with fingers and then snugged with a nipple wrench. The new TOW nipple measures .231 and has to be installed with a wrench and considerable pressure. It will install, but it feels like you are re-tapping the drum to a certain degree. The thread pitch on the two are the same.

A 6mm thread has a .236 major diameter. So I would say it is a 6mm. The threads usually measure smaller on the nipple. Sounds like you might need to run a bottoming tap back in the drum to clean out the threads. They might have some junk build up in the bottom of the threads or the manufacturer used a dull tap to begin with.
