Maybe, although they knew about paper cartridges but seam not to use them. I THINK some carried loading blocks, but we cant prove it. At that time we know some military rifle shooters swed a patch around a ball, but that doesnt seem to have ever made it in to civilian life.Apostles, that were in essence quick load tubes, died out with the advent of paper cartridges, and would not be used again until modern times.Even conical minnies or picket balls didnt get popular among civilians until after the WBTS. Then tended to go into the double rifles.Ball shooting long guns remained popular in the southren mountians up till the 1930s :idunno:

Mountain men were as individual as you or me and each might react differently when being presented with one of the lubes that you suggest. Some might be willing to give it a try and others would reject it out of hand. I would suggest that they would be likely expected to react much as you see today's members of this forum react to the same question......I guess..... but I am neither a mountain man of that era nor do I know a mountain man of that era so I'm doing like everyone else....just guessing. :hmm:

That tube would certainly be a distraction. Who would want to wait until the next rendezvous to get a tube from the sutlers when perfectly good lube can be rendered from the fat on the next critter that was just brought in for cooking.
