So I'm on ebay and I see a bunch of el'cheapo rear stocks. They don't look like much and the price was right. ($9.00) So I buy the Walnut and the Ugly sister. Walnut was more than I should have paid but I need spare parts for my underhammer.

Here is the Ugly sister as advertised and received.

It had some funky finish on it that looks speckled. With my dremil in hand I went to town on it taking off the finish and shaping it with a more pronounced pistol grip. I then stained it with some LMF Cherry stain. Here it is with the wanut stock. I had to cut that much off. The front was inletted with a slot from top to bottom up until right there. I shaped the front with a chisel to fit the H&A frame.

After 9 coats of Tru-oil this is what I ended up with. Not bad I think.

The last photo is with the standard stock that was provided from Deer Creek. I think they want about $50.00 for the rear stock. (unfinished) Now I have a Walnut stock as a spare in case I end up with some wanut forends.

Can you take a pic of the area at the back of the forestock around the nipple/hammer area from underneath and post it please. I'm just at the stage of shaping the fore stock. Also how have you attached the forestock to the barrel.

I ended up with 13 1/4". I still havent put on a butt plate. I figure I'll end up with a 13 1/2" pull by the time I finish. The other gun is a bit longer pull. This shorter pull actually helps me out as I can shoot standing (offhand) a little more comfortable. The longer pull put my other hand too close to the underhammer for my taste.

I'll have to do it when I get back from work. But I can describe it for you. It's basically an inletted barrel chanel of 15/16" with a ram rod grove down the center along the barrel chanel. The ramrod is sandwiched between the barrel and the stock. It looks like a octagon with a bottom groove if that make sense. The forend stocks are pinned in directly to the barrel.

The thinner stock it 1 3/8" wide with a 3/4" round curved router on each side at the bottom.

Also the nipple and flash cup are what stop the ram rod at the end of the stock.

GMWW: Nice job reworking the stock. I was thinking of modifying a spare Enfield butt I have lying around, as it is already drilled for the throughbolt. But Enfield stocks sure are ugly.
By the way, am I correct in assuming that underhammer ramrods can only serve for loading because they are always a little too short to reach the bottom of the barrel for cleaning?
Bill

Hi Bill, you are correct. The ramrod would be about 1/2" short. However, if it is threaded at both ends like mine, you can screw on a T handle to do the cleaning. I used solid brass rods. I just like the weight and feel when loading and cleaning. I get mine at October Country. If you want to save money with them order a couple to save on shipping.

Well I hacked on the second Ebay stock today. I cut it down to fit the action. I drilled a 1/2" hole and then went to town with my chisels. See photo 1.

I then mated it up to the action to see how much more needed to be taken in order to thin the stock down to match up to it. It was about 1/8" around or more. Photo 2.

I fit it to the action and then proceeded to thin the top out a bit and enhance the pistol grip this is what I ended up with.

:shocked2: Man I swear I can't walk and chew gum at the same time lately! Hey John they were coming from the East cost. The seller is all out. However, I see stocks like this from time to time on ebay. There is one now that will end soon. Not sure what these stocks were for. The seller didn't know.

The one on ebay now is from someone else and is for a Remington. Looks like it is set up pretty close to the the Underhammer with a hole through the middle. I'm thinking a Rem 870 stock would work too if some of the picturs I've seen are correct.
