Howdy all,

Has anyone heard of or seen one?

I've been entertaining the idea of building one. Just need a source for a barrel and find out if anybody sells wheellock mechanism. I won't even attempt building a lock at this time I know my limitation. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Rich

There's only 1 mass produced wheellock, which is for a pistol, and is of Indian manufacture (you can buy it through loyalist arms as well as a few other importers).

If you ant a reliable one, and don't want to build it, you'll have to contact custom builders, some of whom are on this forum.

a wheellock lock for a wall bun sounds like huge piece, like truck spring for main spring and a 1 foot lock plate

Unfortunately a wheellock lock has a lot of parts and can run at a premium. The Rifle Shoppe has a few models to choose from and you can buy all the pieces or a completed lock. Looks like their assembled wheellock locks all run $695USD each. Here is their wheellock index. Looks like you can save over $500 by buying their parts set and assembling it yourself, but I am not sure what kind of work this involves.

Hi Rich,
No one sells a wheellock mechanism specifically for a wall gun. The TRS wheellock for an early German musket might work but many wheellocks used for wall guns were much cruder. I have that same set and it will need a lot of work to build including using a welding torch to add metal where parts shrank during casting. The commerically made wheellocks don't appear to be very functional and need a lot of tweaking from someone who actually knows what he is doing. Almost all of them are smaller Dutch or German styles similar to Lauber's design shown in his book on building wheellocks. You should look at the book Landeszeughaus, Graz, which is a catalog of wheellock firearms at the ancient amory in Graz, Austria. They show a number of wheellock wall guns. That way, you would actually know what they looked like.

Gentlemen,

My thanx and apologizes to the replies. Been under the weather lately, lousy way to spend vacation. Thanx for the links, very helpful. I really need to learn how to use the translator functions. I would love talking with Raszpla. Still need to find a barrel maker able to make a six foot barrel with a one inch bore. I'd love to take it to an offhand competition, walk to the line and yell" Let's Party ." :rotf:

Google Translate is one of the best translators available for Raszpla. You might have to rephrase a few things, but overall, it's pretty good. I used it in pm-ing with him when he first came to this board.

I'm hoping you can put something like this together, though I don't know that I'd want to fire a wall gun off hand. They're a bit heavy to shoot without a wall or a yoke.

Rich,

That's right amigo! Real men shoot wall guns off hand! Yokes and shooting sticks are for sissys! :haha:

I actually do have a picture of a wheellock wall gun in one of the picture files I have; I'll have to look for it and post it.

That of course begs the question, who makes big ol long barels at this time?

A standard wheel lock mechanism is going to look small on a wall gun.... most of these had locks scaled to the proportion of the gun.... it would be like putting a pistol lock on a musket...

Hi Rich,
I think you really need to do a little research. Wheellock wall guns during the 16th and 17th centuries were not 18th century wall guns with wheellocks. For example, all of the 95 wheellock wall guns in the Graz armory have barrels less than 60 inches (most are less than 55 inches) and the calibers are less than 0.85. Most are rifled. The TRS early German wheellock musket lock (series 786) would be the best choice but it needs a lot of work. You really need some lock building experience before tackling that one.
