where are all those rugged people

We put on a weekend shoot in february every year. this year we gave away 350 # of pork steaks to only 33 brave souls.
where are those rugged mountain men when you need them? :cursing:

Well, I was on a scout in West Virginia. Had snow, wind and single digit temps. We ended up putting our diamonds together - kind of looked like a brown igloo.
No big give aways - each of us threw something on the blanket.

Tell me about it. Having it all to do over I think there would be 32 people splittin up that pig. Had to bring the brew in the tent to keep the stuff from freezin. You haven't been there till you spit a patch & it freezes by the time you get it to the muzzle & the ball goes right thru it like a potato chip!

I've been out plinking in near zero and wind here in WNC but man I had a fire going and hot water for tea and chocolate. this weekend I'll be on the mountain listening to the race and plinking - temps about 25 F. and windy again, that's as bad as I can stand, will have a fire and hot beverages.

Well, there's a few out here in the Hinterlands of NE Iowa.

I'm hosting out Club's annual Ice Harvest this weekend. It's been below zero for most of the last two weeks, and promising to be about the same this weekend. The ice should be about 14 inches thick. Ice chisels, hand saws, and ice tongs to do it all, of course.

Then we stack a bunch of the ice blocks up and have an "Ice Man Shoot". It's a lot of fun watching those ice blocks shatter with the appropriate application of lead. We end up with a lot of cracked ice.

And Klondike Days is going on this weekend up in northern Wisconsin - Eagle River. There's going to be a big contingent of Great Lakes fur trade era people up there presenting to the public.

And the upper Michigan boys have done a few winter treks already this winter.

So there are a few "hardy souls" out there.

Understand your comment all to well. Same problem here in New York. Experts in all areas of shooting under all conditions. Then a little snow blows in and everyone evaporates.

Gee, lst weekend was the only one that I hadn't been out doing something. If the truck would have been running I would have given some thought to coming down. I am real happy the witer finally got here, my usual trek at New Years saw the couple of us out in little more than a doublet this year (it 55 degrees that afternoon) whereas the last couple of years even my salt pork froze inside my pack.

 

I just do not get the attraction about shooting or being outrside in weather that is not fit for a goat. Maybe it is because I do not like being wrapped up in so many layers that it is dificault to move. Cold weather does not bother me so much, but what we are having now is down right dangerous.

Mike, you gon't get much more NE in Iowa than you are. I am originally from McGregor-Guttenberg area. Today in the warm sunshine we have a Sweetheart shoot (no, we don't shoot each other, the gals have a black powder blanket shoot hosted by the men). The spouses place a prize on the blanket and the gals shoot. Some have never shot before. My wife, right handed, and who never shoots, practiced with a small left handed flintlock and probably shot it better than I would have. After the shoot, the spouse gives his gal her prize which he placed on the blanket. Then a good feed cooked by the men.

Have to hand it to you fellas back East shooting in winter in general and this past few days particular. Folks out here will ski in those temperatures, but darned few will shoot. Just not used to it. I've hunted ducks and birds in blue-bird below-zero weather and ducks in freezing, howling sleet, but wrapped in modern Gore-Tex and synthetics and holding a 12-gauge pump.

Its just a matter of living with what ya got. I've seen it start snowing here in the Keweenaw In Oct and the snow will still be around in May..If'n ya don't get out the cabin fever sets in.
Ya dress in layers and movement is no real problem. Life is good or at least as good as we have for now...June brings the black flies..even worse than the cold.Have to burn more powder to help keep them at bay..

why it got so cold here two weeks ago, almost had to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt..

I rode my Mt bicycle in to work the day of our recent "blizzard"; sure got some strange looks....Going home after dark, the wind, now into my face, picked up so I walked instead of rode home in the dark; it's only 4 miles. Wind was 30-50 mph, snowing 1-2 in/hour, 10 oF. What's the big deal? live with it!!! Wood stove was still going when I got home and I raked the ice off my beard....glad I'd banked a good supply of wood inside! :grin:

Might have been hard shooting that day, wind was nothing like I've hunted in. For that matter getting all the powder into the barrel would taken some thought/practice :hmm: . Still if you practiced in those conditions a calm day at -10-20 oF would be a pice of cake :thumbsup:

P.S. Hack, I've a bunch of blackpowder shooting icefishermen friends that would have done your pork roast right!!! Got a lake nearby to set up on?

Well, I'm sure it's nothing compared to the weather you guys have up across the northern lattitudes, but I've been out at sunup every Saturday morning since the first of the year shooting my weekly 50 shot range session.

This morning it was 19* with 10-15mph wind...cold enough for me...sighting in a new .62cal with gloves on is not the best way but I just can't sit inside every weekend :grin:

I hope up to your expectations? If so Mr. Rayl may be busy in the future with a steady (new) business from those in this forum :thumbsup:
