Anyone know where you can buy old worn out files? I'm looking for a few to make some tools (they will not be used for filing... but as metal chisels and other things). I thought maybe Ebay, but not much there. Where should I be looking?

Thanks,

John

Any flee market, garage sale, antique mall...what do you mean not much on e-bay? I buy files off of e-bay all the time.

Search: "files" ...then look down the left hand side of the page under "Home & Garden" and hit "tools".....3,209 at this moment....now granted many of those are new....but just scroll down and look. Oh, and new ones are often cheap enough and you can use 'em first...or not.

Enjoy, J.D.

Maybe that was part of the problem... I searched on Mill File and only came up with a handful.

Thanks for the info.

Machine shop is a good source, where I work we go thru quite a few. There's always a few in the scrap bin.

Not all files are good for such purposes! Some are only case hardened. Look for Nicholson they are about the best and there is a couple of others that are decent. Right now I am having a brain fart :idunno: as too the names of the other brands.
Maybe some one else can provide them. Wick can probably tell you the name of the others that are decent files!

I do yard sales, the pawn shop and flea markets they are all good sources for files!

Even cabinet makers use (and wear out) files when working with plastic laminate. Just another possible source.
P.S. A box of doughnuts makes a great 'trade' item in most shops and just might get you more files then you can use.

Hi perrybucsdad,

I've got a few old, worn out files laying around that I could send you if you pay the shipping. Send me a pm and we can work out the details.
