I'm looking for real black powder. Sportsman's, Cabela's, and Sheels all stock that Pyrodex junk here in Reno,NV. Does anyone know where to get black powder in the Reno, NV area ( within 75 miles )?

If you are ever in Ca i know a place in Angles Camp and Jamestown that sells Goex.

Worse case scenario, you can always mail order. I order 25 lbs at a time from powderinc.com. It comes out to about $11 a lb which is a lot cheaper than you'd find it at a store anyway. If you don't need that much powder, find a couple shooting buddies to split an order with you. I figure I shoot it up anyway so I might as well stay stocked up. A hedge against inflation as it were, for the short term anyway.

Mark-Fore and Strike has it. Kinda salty though.
Last year they were wanting almost $22 a pound. Don't know what it is now.

+1. get a GI ammo can and store it in a cool dry place. It will last as long as you do.

It's always better to have more than you need, we might end up with NObama.

I just ordered a case (25 lb) from Coonie's. price $329.25 delivered to Ohio from NM. My boys and I go in with my nephew and his three boys. It doesn't take seven shooters long to shoot up a case when we start shooting trap. The way the price goes up it is a good investment.

Didja ask at the counter?

They can't keep real BP out with the imitations and smokeless stuff. Some kind of ATF reg or other.

I was surprised to find out that Bass Pro stocks real BP, but you have to ask for it cuz it is locked up out of sight.

Order from Grafs and sons.. they are the cheapest. Shipping is a flat $3-$6 and they pay the hazmat on orders of 25lbs. about $11 a lb for there powder and they also carry Goex and Swiss.

I just ordered a case from Powder inc. 3 cans Swiss, 11 Goex and 11 KIK.

Hazmat, shipping and powder came to a total of $306.00 for the whole shebang. Should be here Monday.

What kind of mix did you get? All Goex?

Just tried the web site. 25lbs and $40 hazmat fee + shipping.
wetpowder,
I have ordered from Grafs and never seen the HAZMAT fee over $20.Maybe I am out of
touch. I have never ordered 25# but usually
10/12 and even with the HAZMAT it runs me around
$13 give or take.Even if you find it at BPS or
Cabela's I'm sure it will be 25/30% higher than
that.
snake-eyes :hmm:

Someone is wrong. The Haz Mat fee is statutory, and its only $20.00 per shipment. Call back and ask to speak to someone higher up in management. Ask specifically about the Haz Mat fee. You are only charged $20.00 Haz Mat fee for shipping 2 cases!

Has anybody tried the Graf and Sons own brand of black powder (German made? with alder charcoal)??? It is a dollar cheaper than Goex on their site.

Info from site -
"Product Information: A new formulation of black powder developed by Wano Schwarzpulver of Germany for Graf & Sons utilizing premium grade Alder Charcoal. Alder is one of the most preferred bases for sporting black powder due to it's low residue/fouling characteristics as well as shot to shot, lot to lot consistency."

GRAF BLACK POWDER 3F 1LB 25/CS
Price: $11.59

I just check the site...when my cart got more than 22lbs of BP in it the Hazmat doubled to $40????. Not sure why.

I just ordered 25lbs a couple months ago. Any order of powder 20lbs or more the hazmat is FREE as long as you ship Fedex. Online orders have a flat rate of $4.95 and phone orders it's $6+change. I always use the phone...it's worth it to talk to a real person.

This is THE place to buy your powder...Just call them.

The muzzleloading club in Reno is Lakes Crossing Muzzleloaders. Get in touch with them and I'm sure someone will have some available or be willing to split a case (25 pounds).

Just a note to clear up some details:

The 'locked up behind the counter out of sight' requirement is actually a state law, not BATFE regulation. However, BATFE's classification of black powder as an explosive (due to lower ignition temp) rather than a propellant like the substitute powders is what causes the lockup regulation to be in effect.

You might have to join the Reno club in order to buy their powder. It would be illegal for them to sell it to you as a member of the general public, unless they had a federal license to do so.
