Where to purchase black powder in the San Antonio, Texas region? Former sources no longer carry black powder, citing change in definition of black powder from "sporting" to blasting powder.

You can try your local Bass Pro, but you will have to speak to a manager as they keep it locked up in the back and only the manager has access to it.
A better option is to order bulk from a supplier like Powder Inc..

The Powder Horn might be a good place to look. Also a place off of 410 near I-10. Can’t recall the name though. Sorry. It’s in a small shopping center. And there’s Nagel’s off of San Pedro. Not sure though.

I wanted sporting grade and couldn’t find it there years back. I went online.

There is no black powder for sale in Bexar County, I'm afraid to say. Don's Gun Shop off 410 on Fredericksburg Road closed. That was the very last brick and mortar shop to get it. Powder Horn--a wonderful gun store!--stocks propellants for modern center fire reloading, and possibly alternates to black powder, but not black powder. Nagel's does not stock black powder. Rumors that Bass Pro has it have proved unfounded.

Anyone who needs black powder in the cradle of the Texas Revolution and site of the Alamo has to buy it online from an outfit in Arkansas or from Idaho. A disagreeable state of affairs. People who've gone to Brady and elsewhere for state-level muzzle loading shoots and meet ups and rendezvous report low attendance, and few sutlers or trailers of folks selling powder where before there were many. A sad state of affairs!

I'm using powder I got from Winchester, VA from a fellow muzzle loader in the N-SSA who agreed to get me some! :(

It can be bought in Brady in June and October and you do not have to a member of the TMLRA to buy it.

You would think the Alamo Muzzle Loading Gun Club would do a group purchase since it is so hard to find in Texas.

It might be available at the Red River shoots for those in the north.

That is a sad affair indeed! None to be had anywhere?!?! I haven’t looked but wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for me just NW of Austin. Outdoor ranges where I can shoot are an hours drive just to get there.

I buy online from Grafs.

Just goolge black powder sellers. Pick or choose the one you want and order. No big deal. Just have to generally order min of 5 lbs. Most will mix and match so you can order say 4 lbs 3f and 2lbs of 3f etc. If you want swiss, be sure and call to make sure its on the shelf.

Powder, Inc in Clarksville Ar. Their on line pricing I’m told includes freight and HazMat.

If you ever get over by Alexandria look up Jack's Powder Keg in Marksville, LA.
That's not a bad run north of I10 if you take it east. Might be a good excuse to go get some Louisiana cooking and take the lady on a fun adventure. 'Course you'd have to drive through Houston but hey, yah caint have everything!

Last few I bought was from McBrides Guns in Austin. They had it a couple years ago. I'll have to check with them to see if they still carry it.

Interesting. After a halfhearted Google search a few years back I didn’t find anything. Been buying from Grafs anyway and don’t like fighting traffic, but it’s nice to know of shops with it on hand.

Same with pistolas as I’ve been wanting to see them with my hands too...

They do, but make sure you take a fat wallet.
I but online from powdervalleyinc. They will sell by the pound, no minimum. To beat the hazmat and shipping, buy at least 5 pounds and you beat McBrides cost with taxes. If there is enough interest in the SA/AUS area we can get a group buy together and everyone saves a bunch. Last time I did this we had 40# of Black and other stuff mixed in on one pallet. They also sell caps and primers. Check them out.

David,

McBrides stopped selling black powder almost a year ago now. I just happened to be in the store when Clayton came up and told me they decided to stop selling it. Said they would make me a deal if I wanted to buy what they had left. I went ahead and cleaned em out of FFFG.

At the prices they were normally selling at, I understand why they were not selling much of it. Last time I bought in there it was over $32/#. That's when I started buying on-line.

Yeah that was one of the reasons they quit selling it. As well as all the other federal stuff.

The very first pound of black powder I bought there in’69 was less than $3 a pound. Those were the days. After the DuPont debacle they sold a pound of powder, measured out in a paper lunch sack!!! It was all stacked on a shelf by the then backdoor.

I buy all of my 2F, and 3F Goex Powder from Graf & Sons, Inc. from Mexico, MO they only charge $12.50 for Haz Mat Fee,
where almost every else charges $25. You can buy 1 lb. to 25 lbs per case and only pay (1) Haz Mat Fee, very reasonable.
