I live in Laguna Woods, CA, Orange County near Irvine. I am hoping someone on this forum may live my area and know of shooting ranges that accept black powder pistols. I have a 50 year old ASM 1860 Colt Army 45 cal and a new Pietta 1851 Colt Navy 36 cal.

I know of two outdoor ranges which are over two hour drives.

Thanks.

I visited the National Shooting Sports Foundation website and clicked on Ranges and then where to shoot and entered Laguna Woods, CA.
3 ranges came up but only one has an outdoor range that is located about 15 miles away taking I-5 North.
You would need to call to check if they allow black powder revolver shooting or not.

There is also an NRA directory of National Registry of Places to Shoot and Clubs and Associations Directory.--->>> http://findnra.nra.org
I clicked 2 boxes, one for clubs and association & one for places to shoot and there were many options listed within 25 miles of you.

All I did was enter Laguna Woods, CA and all of these came up. For more info, you will need to duplicate my search and click on the more info. links.
For instance, The Cowboys (shooting) may have access to a private shooting range.

Oh, the joys of being a shooter in California.
More than I would be able to put up with.

Perhaps you will be in a better place someday soon.

When I was but a kid, I lived in the SF valley, and we would just drive North to the hills near Sagus (Saugus?) and Newhall, pull over anywhere and blast away. On a Sunday there would be all sorts of people in SanFransiscuito canyon on the sides of the road shooting. Guess things have changed huh?

BTW, most if not all indoor ranges no longer allow the use of blackpowder or blackpowder alternatives. The new regulations require that there be so many air changes in the shooting range to cut down on lead inhalation. That requires a lot of expensive filters in the HVAC system. They would have to replace them more often if they allowed the use of Holy Black.

Excuse my ignorance but I just now found your thread. In the opening of it you mentioned that you have 1860 Army ASM in 45. I have an interest in ASMs. You did say 45 didnt you? I was thinking that model came in 44. Not that it really matters, I just never heard of a 45. Like I stated I like ASMs. Typo maybe?

.44 caliber cap and ball revolvers, both original and replica, are .45 caliber. The old timers used to go by chamber size, and not bore diameter, to designate caliber. The ".36" caliber, is actually a .380", or ".38". Some modern pistol calibers, that date back to the beginning of cartridge revolvers, are still called .38's, when they are actually .35 caliber, because they used the old method of designating caliber.

I can't quite agree with you.
The way I understand it, in the days before cartridge guns came along the caliber of a gun barrel was the size of the bore.
A .36 caliber pistol for instance has a .360 diameter bore and the rifling is a bit larger. Likewise, a .44 caliber Colt or Remington (or any of the other pistols and rifles) have a .440 diameter bore.
The chamber sizes in these guns cylinder is larger so the ball will remain large enough to engage the rifling in the bore so for instance the chambers in a .36 caliber revolver are around .370-.372 diameter and the chambers in a .44 caliber revolver are .449-.452.

(.45 caliber muzzleloaders have a bore size of .450 and .50 caliber muzzleloaders have a bore size of .500.)

When cartridge guns came along, some companies started describing the caliber of the guns by the size of the bullets in the cartridge instead of by the bore size.
Other companies seemed to hire advertising people who felt throwing out all rhyme and reason was a good thing to do if it made the cartridge sound more impressive, so they came up with things like the ".38 " caliber that shoots a .357 diameter bullet.

(Sorry for the journey into the modern stuff but it was necessary to fully describe the situation.)

Well, food for thought for sure. You may be right...but my brain is too tired to strain at the moment. :)

I have heard that before. If I did the math I think it would make more sense to me, but it seems like a long way from, for instance, a .360" bore, and a .375" or .380" projectile. Would that not be some pretty deep rifling? Do original Colts and Remingtons have deep rifling? That I don't know. My replica Remington has very deep rifling, my replica Colt has very shallow rifling. Although, I suppose deep rifling would be good on a pistol that might not be cleaned often, as in war. ?? Seems like rhyme and reason were never there to begin with. !!!

Also, didn't the originals have a tapered cylinder bore? Or not?
