I never understood why people always feel the need to tell others that their powder charge is excessive. If you're shooting paper and you're happy with a load good for you. Shooting paper is fun but I also use my guns for hunting.

I've never randomly decided that I'm going to shoot "X" amount of powder in any gun. I've spent a lot of range time with every gun I own finding the most accurate load and also considering the trajectory of the load. Several of my .54s like both a 70gr charge of 3F and a 95gr charge of 3F. Both loads are equally accurate. The 95gr load shoots flatter which can make a difference if my range estimation is off. That's why I shoot and hunt with the 95gr load.

That load works for me but it might not for the next guy. I'm sure he (or she) has put time into finding a load that works best for them. Unless someone asks for advice on a load I don't think its another persons place to tell them they're using too much or too little powder.

It is ok , he was just wondering why some of us use such big loads , and by the by 100 is not a big load around 160 grns including prime was the avg. military load .

I always shoot my full hunting load because any target work is just practice for hunting.

See that's the way I look at it too. I know a rather famous author who has written about using a half-measure for targets and for small game, and simply doubling the powder charge when going for big game. Well that's fine for him, no worries, but I like to be very simple, so I work up a load for X rifle, and that's the load I use for it all. Sure, I waste powder, but not much.

Along the lines of what pab1 wrote "..., their powder charge is excessive" I've seen folks absolutely flip their [censored] when folks mention using what some think is a "light" load. Mark Baker once mentioned in an article he used 50 grains in his .50 (no mention of distance where it was used) and there was a huge backlash online. Yet, the same folks had no problem with somebody hunting with a BP handgun and 40 grains of powder. :shake:

Every load has an effective range, and if one exceeds that well then you will have less than desired results.

With my deer rifles I also only shoot targets with my hunting load. If I want to plink or shoot squirrels I simply use a small caliber rifle. I rarely do the "two load" (light & heavy) thing since a .36 is available.

.54 is 85 gr FFFg and 16 bore is 75 gr FFg.

Simple.

"Back in the day," that is most likely what most folks did. They used the most accurate hunting load and learned how to "hold off" when needed, at some ranges.

Today we have the luxury of knowing we will only shoot targets or be hunting. So we can find two accuracy loads if we wish and not have to worry about needing the hunting load when we are only punching paper.
