:shocked2: I would never be so careless and stupid to do anything that "DUMB". However, I have loaded my main charge thru the vent hole a couple of times:redface:.

A buddy of mine did it for the first time this AM. His first day of muzzleloading too! I also dryballed on my first day.

Gentlemen, that is a patently unsafe tactic that will turn your liners into projectiles in very short order. . . What are you thinking! :nono:
the safe thing to do is take off your breech plug and carefully tamp the charge around the ball. you may have to unseat the ball, but that's alright. Once the charge is in place, carefully screw the breechplug back into place. give the ball a quick tamp with your rammer to insure proper seating, and fire away.

Well, not seeing any "laughing icons" in your post, it begs the question:

You're kidding, right??
:shocked2:

After a year and a half shooting ML's, I dry-balled for the first time this year - just once I think... or was it twice? :hmm:

Used one of those "20th century correct" CO2 ejectors to get it out.

This sounds like the way I do projects. Instead of tapping the ball the last 1" to push it out the breech while you have it off (after dragging the acetylene torch, 3 foot wrench and vice on a 200 pound workbench to the range to remove the breechplug). Instead, add powder, reassemble, and then try and shoot it out. :haha:

If a vent or nipple holds up to a normal main charge it ought to hold up to a small "clearing" charge.

I've never removed a vent from a flintlock (had two that had no liners - just holes) so I end up pulling the ball the old ugly way. :shake:

Never this month, yet. Never last month, either.

I think I have gone as long as five or six years without, and then I'll have a string of 'em. :cursing: Twice so far this year.
Probably what gives rise to the old saying:
"There are two kinds of muzzleloader folks...those who have dry balled and those who will"

And I thought I used a great deal of restraint by not asking you if you'd lost your mind completely!

Since this year marks my 30th year of shooting muzzleloaders I can honestly say that I make it a point to dry ball once every 15 years. Done it twice in my career. I'm sure I'll do it again and when I do I bet I have that same sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach I did the first time. I'd almost bet I say the same thing I did the first time.
